Getting Out The NY Vote

2004_11_voting.jpg

As various journalists and pundits grope for turns of phrase that capture the race for the Presidency ("too close to call!" "down to the wire!" "neck and neck!"), Gothamist would like to take the time to remind everyone that polls are open from 6AM until 9PM tomorrow (FINALLY!). The NY Times has an article on what you should do and have when you go to vote, which is part of a section called "Making Votes Count." [Ask Gothamist also covered polling places; a reader emailed us telling her that her change-of-address was not effected in time to change her district, so be sure to check where you're registered to vote.] You can call NYPIRG with complaints about polling places at (212) 822-0282.

Gothamist is also very proud of the New Yorkers who went to swing states to rally voters. There's also a NYT piece on Democrats eying the State Senate. The NY State Assembly and Senate are pretty ineffective, so Gothamist is guessing that the NYT will advocate for voting for the challenger again.

Check out other election sections that show what races are in different boroughs from Gotham Gazette and NY1.

??

I Always show m Drivers license, but come to think of it, I only do so since I tend tyo forget what District I'm in...

in the past, all i have done is told them my address, which they use to figure out my district, then i get to the booth and they ask your name, and you you just sign your name to match the sig they have on record.

Friendly advice from a poll worker:

Even though ID isn't usually required in order to vote, please do be sure to bring it if you have one (any photo ID is acceptable, it doesn't have to be a drivers' license). When your name is looked up in the voter rolls it may indicate next to it that showing ID is required, possibly for a legitimate reason (eg: you registered by mail and ID wasn't verified) or due to some sort of error. As long as you have your ID you'll be able to vote on the machine; if not, you'll have to use a provisional ballot, which might later be invalidated on a technicality.

i just checked, and it seems as though you don't even need a photo ID. your ID can be a photo ID, utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck, other gov't document. all but the photo ID must have the name and address and be from the last year.

oh, and there is also a special affidavit ballot if you don't have or refuse to show ID.

Well, Live and Learn. My Mother used to do Poll work for Primaries and general Elections. Some of the Nonsense that goes on ranges from amusing to scary.
My Personal Favorite: The guy who insisted he go in with his wife to "Make sure she votes correctly". The Cop didn't arrest him, but it wasn't a pretty scene.

I wonder what Voter Fraud will be commited this year in NYC? It's an *OLD* gag in NYC going back more than a Century...

Hi folks -- A bit off-topic, but any suggestions of phone banks I can head to tomorrow to make calls to Pennsylvanians and such...? (Both addreses and phone #s would be helpful.) Thanks,

Try:

I found that through America Coming Together. I'm fairly certain they need people today, tonight and at various times tomorrow.

Beth--if you're in or near the Upper West Side, there's a Kerry/Edwards place on 106th & Broadway (SE corner). I'm pretty sure they have phone banks there, and I think they may also be organizing trips to Ohio and/or other swing states.
