With so much confusion surrounding voting this year, you might be wondering what you should do if you show up at your local polling place on Tuesday and find that your name isn't on the roster of registered voters.
Take this advice from Electoral-Vote.com, a daily, nay hourly, read for political junkies:
First, be absolutely sure you are in the correct precinct. If you are in the wrong precinct, in most states, your vote won't be counted. If you are not 100% certain of your polling place, go to www.mypollingplace.com and check. Alternatively, call the toll-free number 1-866-OUR-VOTE or your county clerk. If you are sure you are in the correct polling place and the officials claim you are not registered, ask for a provisional ballot and fill it out correctly. You are entitled to one by law. Politely, but firmly, insist on being given a provisional ballot.
If you've moved recently, it's doubly important to check where you are registered. In New York the difference of only a few blocks can put you in an entirely new voting district. And in New Jersey, where polls show the two presidential candidates in a statistical tie, having your vote count could make all the difference.
While Gothamist recommends you get to your polling place early, remember that as long as you are in line before the polling place closes you have a right to cast your ballot.
For questions in New York, call 1-866-VOTE-NYC or visit The Board of Elections website. In New Jersey, contact your local County Clerk's office. Connecticut information can be found here.

Hmm...that link isn't very helpful. My response after entering my address and ZIP:
Sorry, we have not received any information from your precinct.
I just tried it and it seems to work fine. Anyone else?
i just called and it tells you if you are registered, where to vote, your party affiliation (if any), and your districts. i wasn't sure if my change of address went through or not.
I emailed this to Gothamist, but since decided the only way to get the word out was to post on Craigslist:
In August my friend Matt and I were heading walking past McCarren Park in Williamsburg when we were approached by a 20-something man with a clip board who asked if we were registered to vote. We both were, but our registrations were for our previous addresses (mine in Fort Greene, his back home in New Jersey). He stated that by filling out the paperwork he had we could change our addresses.
We did, and since then, neither of us received any information concerning our registration. I didn't remember this happening the previous election, so I didn't think too much of it.
Today after reading your post regarding how to find your polling place, I called the voter hotline to check my registration. An unskilled operator moved me to tears (I mean, literally—I haven't been this upset in a while!) by telling me I wasn't in fact registered. Thankfully, I got my composure back and called again, and when prompted, offered my Fort Greene zip. I am registered, but in my old neighborhood.
Which brings me to my point of concern—if others wrongfully though they were being registered or filing changes of address with this same clip board carrying guy, they may be unaware that those forms were un-submitted. In the case of my friend Matt, this entails going back to New Jersey to vote on Tuesday! I'm sure that there are quite a few non-natives who have come from much further, which is what worries me.
I urge anyone who registered with a clipboard carrier in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg area to call and verify their registration and polling place, as I know how devastating it could be to find out your not registered.

Subsequently, people have responded with some pretty terrifying info. that I hadn't managed to conceive on my own—this information may have been collected for identity theft purposes. I've since checked my credit report, but I wanted to put everyone on alert to the second step in the even you find out you are un-registered and attempted to do so with a clipboard carrier. http://www.freecreditreport.com actually does in fact offer a free credit report, no emails necessary.
I hope no one is unlucky enough to have the worst case scenario happen to them.
