Columbia Looks Into Bias Claims

Another controversy brews at Columbia University: Students are claiming that some teachers are anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist, and anti-American, with the release of a documentary short. Sponsored by The David Project, the documentary claims that professors in the Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures Department (aka Mealac) created an unhospitable environment for Jewish students. Columbia President Lee Bollinger has tapped Provost Alan Brinkley to lead an inquiry into the film's claims, including one that Professor Joseph Massad calls Palestinians the "new Jews" and Jews "the new Nazis." And Representative Anthony Weiner is getting into the act, calling for Massad's firing. The Daily News has an editorial that says Bollinger's actions are too little, too late, but from what Gothamist has read, it doesn't seem like The David Project had screened the film until yesterday. Racial tensions have, sadly, pretty much always been a norm at Columbia (its history of problems with its Harlem neighbors speaks to that). Earlier this year, a cartoon in the student paper caused some rifts in the Columbia community.

where's the beef? (the video that is)

This is just another attempt to limit academic freedom. It’s gotten to the point that anyone who opposes Israeli policies is an anti-Semite. Bunch of cry-babies and profession victims. What a load of toss.

Hey Ralphie, its not a big mystery when Arabic language teachers are preaching that Israelis are Nazis, that is is anti Jewish sentiment. It is not academic fact that Israeli actions are equal to the genocide of the Nazis, now matter how liberal you are. Don't be a moron... go read up on the subject.

The only mystery is how silly we Americans are as a nation vis a vis the Israel situation in the Middle East. We have, for some unknown reason, aligned ourselves with a pariah nation that has no strategic importance – not to mention any natural resources (i.e. OIL). So, when someone actually has the courage to question this relationship we have with Israel, they are immediately branded an anti-Semite. We have an economy that is completely dependant on oil – and the Arabs have it. Please explain to me why it makes sense to align ourselves with a country that the Arabs hate when it threatens that which we need to keep our economy working? And I really enjoy the way it is spun that Israel and the US have similar political systems, which is completely untrue. The US is a pluralistic democracy. Israel is not. Wasn’t it created (by the United Nations) as a homeland for the Jews? If Israel wants those contested lands, then they should figure out a way to develop indigenous weapons systems using their own sweat, brainpower and tax dollars and have at it with the Palestinians. Let’s have America get back to what we do best – being a fair broker and champion of the underdog.

As for the random Professor comparing Jews to Nazis – come on man, these people that do this are rogues. They don’t represent the mainstream. No one listens to them, until the ADL makes a fuss. The victim thing is really trite and boring.
