I think this whole rent story is crap...they got run out of town by Bleeker St. Pizza on the corner of 7th and Bleeker...grab yourself a slice of the "Nonna Maria" and you'll know what pizza is all about.

Eshan, the yuppies moving into this city are like adoring/smothering parents. They love you. They only want the best for you. But they don't know when enough is enough and their constant attention actually ends up hurting things in the end. Anyone who has lived in this city for at least 5 years know the place is not as great as it once was. And it's not like 5 years ago things were shitty and needed gentrification to the level we have now. The West Village has always been gentrified. It's laughable to think otherwise. And while I'm sad the old Joe's storefront is gone, they're quite good at their new place. In fact even in Park Slope, the Joe's of Bleeker near President Street has one of the best slices you can buy in Brooklyn South. Right next to Fascati's on Henry Street as far as quality goes.

why the dramatic increase? Did it not have rent control Word had it the old landlord built a 20-year rent freeze into the building, so when he passed away and the property was sold, all his tenants could stay. Let's be serious: $900/month for storefront corner rent is ridiculous in this town. just got back with two slices of the "new" joes....damn it wasn't nearly as good You're just talking yourself out of it. Over the summer I got a slice from each for comparison's sake, and they both tasted great.

Dazzle not true walk from 7th ave south down to the water and count how many chains you see as compared to the east village. no comparison. many long time residents here as well. real new yorkers!

Not all the yuppies live in Brooklyn. Trust me - plenty of us poor folk live there, too. Hell, if all the yuppies live in Brooklyn, who lives in Manhattan? Oh yeah, that's right - loaded yuppies, trustafarians and college kids living 3 to a room.

dismantled for yuppies? what are you talking about -- all the yuppies live in Brooklyn now. As for Joe's, sorry to see it go and I wonder what will replace it for $15,000 a month, but why the dramatic increase? Did it not have rent control and if that's the case, how did it manage $900 in rent?

News to foodies and yuppies. You're part of the reason this city is dying. And this is a great example of that happening. The Waverly theater is gone. Zitos too. This whole city is being dismantled to provide more housing for yuppies. And you know what? In a few years everything that makes this city great will be killed and hollowed out for housing. You'll finally be able to live here! But is it really living? Also to "Real New Yorker": "I was just talking to friends the other day about how the west village hasn't been as gentrified as the east..." Is that a joke? The West Village has ALWAYS been gentrified AND more expensive.

Relax, relax. Joe's new storefront is three doors up the block. Not quite the same charm, but the same great pizza. After 20 years of rent breaks, how sad can one really be?

Sigh. I guess the original rumors we heard back in August were, in fact, true. Very, very upset about this one, but I guess I'll now have to give the "other" Joe's a try. It's such a shame when rent increases drive out local treasures.

I think that should read 660% increase in rents, not 66%. The Post article says the rent is going from $900 to $15,000. Yikes!

i used to live 2 blocks away from joe's (bedford btw carmine/downing) and would pick up $2 slices constantly. for dinner when i was feeling poor, for a snack, because it smelled good when i walked by, because i liked the pizza guys inside, because i was wasted drunk, because it was fucking good. ... for all kinds of reasons. i estimated that i'd eaten 5,000 slices from there over 2 1/2 years.. but then tien pointed out to me that that would be like $10k.. so.. it probably wasn't that many, but it was A LOT. I cant imagine what is goign to go in there, but it's not going to be as good. there was nothing like grabbing a slice then sitting in father demo square (watch out for the herds of pigeons) and people watching. i wonder who is going to pay that much rent. i used to love the turquacino like a block away down bleecker, then it closed and sat empty for about a year until i moved away.. it might still be empty now.
