The Giants put their own stamp on what has been a brutal October in the New York sporting scene by dropping a home game against a mediocre Detroit team by 28-13.
The offense got itself in the red zone three times and came away with only two field goals and a turnover. The defense didn't show up in big spots and it certainly didn't help that linebacker Barrett Greeen was suspended by head coach Tom Coughlin. The Giants are now 4-2 and have to travel to play the 5-1 Minnesota Vikings next week.
The Giants obviously spent their bye week reading their press clippings rather than preparing for the Lions - a team that was coming off a 38-10 home loss to the Packers and was struggling on offense. The Giants have a history of gagging all over themselves following a bye week and are now 3-13 all-time after byes, including eight losses in their last nine.
"We took some things for granted, started to feel a little full of ourselves," Coughlin said after the game. "We didn't prepare properly."
Defensive end Michael Strahan added, "If that's what he told you, then that's what he saw. Write it."
Thanks Michael, we will.
We at Gothamist would also like to admit that we picked the Giants (6.5 point favorites) to cover the spread. Needless to say they didn't. Our record agaisnt the spread is now 3-1 and in retrospect we blame the malt liquor for us picking the Giants coming out of a bye week.
