Williamsburg Rapists Caught

Police have two men suspected of a Williamsburg rape last week. The men had followed the woman into an apartment buliding at Driggs and North 8th, which was near where two women were raped in April. A phone tip led to the arrests, relieving residents some what.

A couple weeks ago, someone emailed Gothamist about an all volunteer organization they were starting to provide women in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan (at this point) would be guaranteed free rides home and door to door escorts, where at least two volunteers (one being a woman) would make sure you got home safe. Please email us again or comment about - we've misplaced your contact info. It's a great idea and we're curious if it started. [UPDATED:] Thanks to all the readers who emailed and commented - the organization is Right Rides. Read the comments more information as well.

Here is a message that is circulating around North Brooklyn regarding Right Rides:

Date: Fri, 15 Oct 2004 14:01:09 -0700 (PDT)
From: Teresa Toro
Subject: RightRides.org - calling all cars!
To:

Last night, Teri Muroff and I met the RightRides women, Oraia and Consuelo. They are FABULOUS and very well organized for a small startup program. They already have a ton of volunteers but alas, no one has a car! If you know someone who'd be willing to lend their car, and/or volunteer with their car, please pass this email round and round!

There's a website which will tell you all about this important initiative which will help Greenpoint and Williamsburg women feel a little bit safer when going home (particularly late at night), and has all the contact info you need:

http://www.rightrides.org/

If you'd like to meet Oraia and Consuelo, come to the 94th Precinct Community Council meeting this Monday/October 18 at 7:30pm, at the Greenpoint Savings Bank on Calyer Street, off Manhattan Ave. They'll also make a presentation at the CB1 meeting on November 9 but please, if you already know you're interested, get in touch with them before then.

RightRides will be holding a free 90-minute self defense class for women and transgender folks this Sunday at 1pm. Brenda Jones from the Center for Anti-Violence Education will be conducting the class and it will be held at the YMCA in Greenpoint. For more information or to RSVP, email me at tiara@crushcore.com.

Perhaps the point of RightRides is to provide a free service, but I would absolutely be willing to pay something to have a service like this readily available. It seems that their startup problems are rooted in not having enough money. Why not charge a low, flat rate in order to pay for gas, tolls, and repairs? I think that would be reasonable. I've even hoped that someone would start an all female-drivers cab company. We need something to feel safe and comfortable getting home late at night. Good luck to RightRides. It's a great idea.
