A while back, we answered your question on renters insurance. Generally, we think getting it is a good idea; it isn't that expensive and it can protect you from lots of unforeseen problems.
Yesterday, Manhattan Users Guide posted a pretty comprehensive guide to insurance with lots of information we didn't think to include in our answer. Check it out.

Renters insurance is so worth it. You never know what will happen. And for those of you who are affianced, you can add your rings to the policy easily!
I can't say this loudly enough: GET RENTER'S INSURANCE.
Even if you mess up and don't get exactly the right policy, it's so worth it. My apartment was robbed in the spring. I had renter's insurance and my roommate did not. My policy costs $8 a month. I got replacements for all of my electronics (totaling over $700) and money for my jewlery and other various items (over $2,000). My roommate lost more than I did, and got nothing.
We got renters insurance because I had a weird paranoia about a neighbor setting his apartment on fire. Then 9/11 happened. Renters insurance is worth it.
