Open House New York

ohny.jpg

It goes without saying that New York City is chock full of amazing buildings and spaces. And many of them aren't normally open to the public. But this weekend you can visit over 100 places throughout the five boroughs, free of charge, during the Second Annual Open House New York.

From self-guided tours to discussions with designers, OHNY offers a rare glimpse into your fair city. Detailed information about each site - day(s) of participation, opening times, travel directions, etc. - are listed online. Alternately, you can pick up printed guides at the following locations:

The Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place
Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, 2 91st Street
Grand Central Partnership, Info Booth, Grand Central Terminal
Municipal Art Society, 457 Madison Avenue
NYC & Company Visitors' Center, 810 Seventh Avenue
Wall Street Rising, 25 Broad Street

OHNY organizers recommend you bring a good street map and comfortable footwear. Gothamist would like to remind you to check the weekend subway summary, as we had some difficulty last year getting to Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Of course you may want to bring a camera. Whether you're a photographer, photoblogger, or just toting a camera around with you this weekend, you can enter your masterpiece snapshots the OHNY Weekend photo competition. Details available here.

Our recommendations from last year's excursion include the Little Red Lighthouse, Jefferson Market Library, and High Bridge Water Tower, all in Manhattan. This year, we are getting up bright and early Saturday to see the Astoria Pool in Queens.

This is such an awesome event. The weather looks to be beautiful, and I personally can't think of a better thing to do than check out the New York you have always wondered about.

There's two similarly named cemeteries in the EV. New York Marble Cemetery is on 2nd Ave between 2nd and 3rd. It's open the last Sunday of every month. I went a while back. It's an interesting place.

New York City Marble Cemetery is around the corner on 2nd St between 1st and 2nd Aves. It is rarely open to the public.

ohhh... joe, i was very confused about the two cemeteries... so similar in location and name! i'm definitely going on sunday.

Had I not gone to the one cemetery, I wouldn't have known about the other. I think, and I hope I'm not making this up, they were associated at one point but they've long since gone their separate ways.

the free catalogue at center for architecture is handy to bring along~
