I was in an F train once when some high school kid pulled the cord. We were between Smith/9 and 4thAve/9th and the train went screeching violently to a halt, sending people and coffee cups flying.

Modern trains such as the R-142 and R-143 (the new white-interior ones) have circuitry which prevents the emergiency brake from functioning if the train is more than a small distance outside of a station. In theory, this will prevent the trains from becoming stranded under a river everytime some joker decides to pull the cord.
