Weekend Update: Fey and Poehler

2004_10_weekendupdate.jpg

Hello, nurse: It's the Age of Fey and Poehler, as they are the first all-female Weekend Update team on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon had a nice chemistry - you know, sharp, caustic and riffing on how Jimmy was stupid and pretty and Tina was slutty and angry - but we were feeling Fallon Fatigue, as he couldn't really keep his shizzle together during skits, especially ones with Horatio Sanz. So Gothamist was terrifically excited to see Amy Poehler's blond, twinkling yet semi-maniacal eyed. face next to Tina behind the desk. And, for the boys (and girls), there is the promise of lots of lesbian flirting this season.

What did you think of the premiere? Gothamist loved the debate parody, and even though it was too soon after the opening monologue, the sketch about John Kerry, Theresa Heinz Kerry, James Carville, and, Bill Clinton, as played by Darrell Hammond (yay!), was fun, too. Ben Affleck needs to stay behind costumes and make-up more often. And how did you like that Unidentified New Jersey Resident? Whatevs will have a review of SNL from Nummer & H-Bomb, and Saturday-Night-Live.com has a smattering of reviews from different poeople too. And the Daily News had an article about how SNL was still successful.

Overall a pretty decent start to the season. Ben Affleck is a consistantly funny host and at least knows how to poke fun at himself. The opening sketch went way too long, and they beat the dead horse beyond recognition. I guess it was hard work (groan) writing the entire sketch in a day and a half. I think the Tina/Amy team has some potential, as soon as Amy loosens up a bit. Biggest disappointment was Debbie Downer, which completely KILLED last season (maybe because the cast couldn't stop laughing?) but this time it was just forced and unfunny. Poor Rachel. Oh well, looking forward to Episode #3 (since new episodes come in threes and every third one is always the best)

Being that Dratch's Debbie Downer sketch from last year is now legendary, it was nice to see it brought back within the first half hour of the season premiere. Affleck did a good job. Rob Riggle handled his parts like a pro. Tina & Amy are both brilliant and will be great to watch behind the desk. Weren't the Scissor Sisters supposed to play?

Yes, Debbie Downer on last year's Lindsay Lohan episode was legendary, but I agree it was for the reasons cited -- nobody could keep it together during that sketch at all, and it was hilarious! I think Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will be a great combo and got off to a great start. Maybe I've been watching too much Daily Show, but Amy kinda reminds me of Samantha Bee. Probably just the blonde hair. And is anyone really going to see Taxi this weekend?

Amy P, Samantha Bee, and the other cute one on "Best Week Ever"...small smart blonde funny girls are the new hotness!

I always thought Jimmy was overrated. One of the things you have to do as an actor is stay in character, and he was THE WORST at this basic skill. The only time the crack-up was hilarious was the Lindsay Lohan/Debbie Downer ep referenced above, and that was because everyone was off their game and kept getting more and more giggly, and we've all been there...

Fallon's best performances were always the ones where he mimicked singers, near-perfectly. IMHO. I forgot to tape this week's ep. So I haven't seen Amy and Tina together, but I think they're both terrific independently, and I'm glad that SNL's women are finally getting some attention. The only thing better? If they'd pay me some attention. Yeah, I know. But a writer-girl's gotta dream.

My #1 complaint about SNL was Jimmy and Horatio, they could never keep it together when they were in the same sketch. And it was completely UN-FUNNY to watch them giggle at themselves; not to mention amatuerish. Well now that Jimmy's gone we can only hope that the same fate will fall upon Horatio.

A long, long time ago (when SNL first started) in what feels like another galaxy (where I was younger), I could stay up for the whole show.
I lasted 30 minutes this time. I liked what I saw. Political humor/sarcasm always works on SNL.
Loved the John Kerry imitation. Loved the Swift Boat ad spoof. Loved it when Ben said something about the train wreck that was his life. Loved Alec Baldwin showing up.

i've been watching snl since i was 8. the last couple of years it's lost a lot of funny, but this saturday's was pretty good. i was getting up to go to bed because i was falling asleep when i saw that it was going to be an all-chick weekend update so i stayed up to watch it--pretty good--i think they are going to be great together!

Funniest line of the night went to Poehler's ad-lib:

"I have hashish at my house!"

I think she'll do just fine on the desk. Nice new opening to WU, as well.

And Will Forte is the new Will Ferrell. Even Don Pardo thinks so as he screwed up Forte's intro: "Will Fer--" But bring Armisen and Forte front and centre in more sketches and I think SNL will be funny again.

While I am a longtime fan of the show, and always want to laugh and like it, I was overall disappointed...I thought Affleck's Carvillee impersonation was hilarious, but otherwise there wasn't much other funny stuff there. Amy Poehler is just a pretty face, and will not cut it at Weekend Update,,,she just doesn't have it..

Amy was also really good in the Upright Citizens Brigade.

Amy is just a pretty face?? are you out of your mind? she is a pioneer in improvisation and one of the most hilarious people ever to come out of the chicago comedy scene, where may i remind you, belushi ackroyd and murray began and studied under the same teacher as well. basically 70 percent of all cast members came from the same scene...watch old episodes of UCB or go visit the theatre in nyc. she brought it there....

Seth Meyers is so HOT!!!! Tina Fey is not funny, and I have never liked Amy Poehler. Weekend Update sucks!!!! The only funny part of it was Elton John.

My thoughts about Amy Poehler succeeding Jimmy Fallon as Tina Fey's Weekend Update co-anchor on SNL this season.

-I think they would say to her that you steping into his shadow, I think she would say to then 'I don't want to step into his shadow, I want to step into my own'. Like by quoting the late Ray Combs about succeeding Richard Dawson as host of Family Feud "People say those are big shoes to fill. I don't to wear his shoes, I've got my own." By making history that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as the all-female Weekend Update duo. Come on guys, Tina and Amy are great folks.
