New York Film Festival Opens

2004_09_nyff.jpg

Fall is truly the best season of the year, because that's when the New York Film Festival begins. The NY Times has a special section dedicated to the NYFF (tips on how to score tickets to the films - most of which are sold out) . A.O. Scott
reviews Agnes Jaoui's Look At Me and the NY Times is also asking readers for questions for Jaoui, Pedro Almodovar, and Mike Leigh this week. Related: Newsday's John Anderson notes how this year's festival has controversial topics in it (priestly pedophilia in Almodovar's Bad Education, abortion in Leigh's Vera Drake).

These are stills from films we're interested in, besides the Rohmer, Almodovar, Leigh, Zhang, Payne, and Jaoui films: (Counter-clockwise from top left) Moolade by Ousmane Sembene from Senegal; Woman Is The Future of Man by Hong Sang-soo from Korea; Tropical Malady by of Apichatpong Weerasethakul from Thailand; and Tarnation, a documentary by American Jonathan Caouette.

Are you going to the New York Film Festival? What are you seeing? Or are you just waiting for NY releases?

Jen- PLEASE go see Rois et reine (Kings and Queen). It is the sleeper film of the festival and one of the best you are likely to see this year.

    Go and enjoy!

While I was definitely interested in seeing "Look at Me" and "Notre Musique", neither of which I could get tickets to, I might try to get tickets to "The Empress Dowager" and the old Shaw kung fu movies. Memories....
