Tonight's Appointment TV: The First Presidential Debate

2004_09_debate1.jpg

Good bye, fall TV season, for one night: It's Presidential Debate Time! The first debate happens tonight in Miami, because if stuff if going to get all crazy and confused in a presidential way, it's gotta be in Florida. If only there was Miamist. President Bush's and Senator Kerry's aides have been getting things ready, like making sure the lighting is flattering and not too shiny. Of course, the candidates have it pretty easy, given the stupid agreement they crafted. These are the men that are supposed to lead us? Pshaw.

You'll be able to read transcripts at the Commission on Presidential Debates, but you can read old transcripts there, like Lloyd Bentsen telling Dan Quayle he's no JFK and the Bush Perot Clinton ones. Check out the NY Times' Campaign 2004 section. And Gothamist appreciates that Jason Kottke took the time to put together the Voters Information Guide, which is a helpful look at how to vote.

Anyone know of bars hosting Presidential Debate parties in NYC?

I would also like to know about such a bar.

You can read all about the debate and who won from an AP article that's already out:

If the debate is already over, what's the sense in watching tonight?

The real problem is not this dual press conference we'll see tonight, but the spin afterwards. The press is holding Bush to such low standards that it seems unlikely that we'll wake up tomorrow and see a general consensus that he "lost" the debate. Kerry has much to prove, for sure, but Bush just has to get through it. Such is the story of his life.

Our democracy is not served by the sports-reporting through which debate coverage is filtered. Instead of looking for "You're no Jack Kennedy" moments, why doesn't the mainstream media try to get to the truth of what the two candidates are saying?

Because the mainstream media is just as broken as our political process.

where is the gothamist debate drinking game post? i'm going to need help to get through this.

by the way, a couple of debate watch parties in NYC:

Drinking Liberally is meeting at Rudy's for pre-debate drinks and then watching at the McManus Democratic Club on 44th (link)

NY Young Dems and DL21C are watching at San Marcos at 12 St. Marks (link) but it sounds like it might be a packed house
