Ask Gothamist appreciates all the responses we got to yesterday's query about what the sticky substance is that seems to be covering manhole covers around the city. Almost all Ask Gothamist readers agreed that it was a substance applied to manhole covers by Con Ed in response to the women who was burnt by a manhole cover recently.
One Ask Gothamist reader pointed us to the Public Utility Law Project website, where the purpose and content of the sticky substance was confirmed:
"Michael S. Clendenin, a spokesman for Con Ed, said no statistics were available for the number of burn cases. He said that the utility has increased its efforts to prevent steam hazards by spraying more manhole covers with a coating of polyurethane epoxy, which insulates against excess heat released by steam pipes."

I heard read somewhere (god knows where) it was also to create smoother streets - less potholes, etc. Did anyone else read this?
Not for nothing but the woman in the photo really shouldn't complain about the injury -- the burn marks make her ass infinitely more interesting to look at, and draws the eyes away from her "poignees d'amour."
I am so sick of this stupidity surroundng the photo. She looks fine. I'm sure you and your lover are in mind-bendingly good shape. Congrats, meat head.
Ohmygod is that picture for real?!?!
Even if the above poster has backfat, s/he probably doesn't go around letting people photograph it.
When I first saw the photo, I thought it was a cheesy-slutty girl lower-back tat gone awry.
this was explained in a recent nytimes q & a in the city section of the times... i think it was 2 -3 sundays ago? i did a cursory search but didn't see it... they said it was to keep the temperature down i think...
interesting about the covers. here I thought the goo was simply them breaking down from all the voltage going through it. good to hear that it isn't the case.
Oh man, those manhole covers are gonna be so bad in the rain/snow for bicyclists!
