best place HANDS DOWN (so far... i'm always researching) is El Grand Morelos on the corner of Grand and Graham in Williamsburg. look for the cakes in the window. tortas are to die for, and it's open 24 hours.

I agree, the number of "good" Mexican restuarants has increased in recent years, I like Taco Bell for every now and then, but aye dios mio, it is nothing compared to authentic Mexican food.

The best Mexican cheap food I've found is at at a tiny Mexican Bakery on 5th Ave between 48th and 49th streets in Sunset Park Brooklyn. I am not sure what the name is but its the only bakery on the east side of 5th avenue on that block. Walk past the baked goods to the little tables in the back. The food is delicious, cheap and exactly like what I tasted in Mexico.

uh... the double tortilla thing with tacos is because you need two so it doesn't fall apart. real tacos are *juicy.*

The best tacos below Harlem are at Tehuitzingo on 10th Ave between 47th and 48th...enchilada pork, potatos & chilies, falling-apart pork belly, bbbq'd goat, mmm... though their kitchen was being renovated a couple weeks ago so maybe call ahead. 212.397.5956

The place in Park Slope is called "Tacos Nuevo Mexico" and it is good and cheap. Just a few blocks down from Taqueria DF. Keep going on 5th Ave and you'll make it to Sunset Park a sizeable portion of the Mexican population lives.

There's a great place called (I think) Tacos Mexicanos on 5th Ave. and 12th Street in Park Slope. Tacos of all kinds, tortas, as well as standard platters like bisteak or enchiladas. Few gringos. Best I've found in the city.

If you're in Lower East Side, Festival Mexicano at Rivingston and Essex gets you the most bang for your peso.

The soups are quality and the portions are decent sized. Prices are reasonable - 3 tacos for $6.50 - not exactly Taco Bell prices, but it's good for what you're getting. The service isn't the fastest, even when the place is practically empty and I imagine the Day-Glo walls aren't for everyone. But otherwise, this place is solid.

I go to Zaragoza bakery on Ave A and 13th a fair bit -- similar to Matamoros in its deli w/ food counter set up (actually its even more minimal on the food coutner side, and way fewer hipsters). And I buy tamales from the tamale couple in Greenpoint that was in the Times last week.
