In The Year 2009: Conan Gets Tonight Show

Thank the forces at NBC-Universal: Conan O'Brien will take over The Tonight Show in 2009, when Jay Leno will retire. When Jay Leno resigned a fat contract earlier this year, O'Brien openly wondered what that meant for his plans at NBC, especially since CBS, ABC, and FOX are looking for some late-night action, so the suits at NBC-U must have seriously hustled. Gothamist's only request is that Conan stays in New York City. There's another question that remains: Who will CBS target as David Letterman's heir apparent?

For fun and clips of Walker, Texas Ranger, Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

NO! NO! Please, don't let this happen. Remember when Letterman was on later and he was funny? And now he's not. Please don't let this happen to my beloved Conan.

great for him, although the LA dynamic of the Tonight Show is kind of an odd combination. everyone can agree that his hosting the Emmys a few years back was the turning point in proving his odd humor can translate.

you knew this was coming - does jon stewart feel like working for CBS again?

CBS will bring in Jon Stewart to fill Letterman's shoes seeing as how Viacom owns both CBS and Comedy Central. Stewart vs. Conan... how could you possibly choose?

I went to a lecture/interview with Conan and the NYT's Bill Carter two years ago and Conan indicated that other than an 11:30 show, he always wanted to become a comic novelist, like Woody Allen's early stuff.

i just wonder if he's going to want to take a couple years off from his current show. maybe a guest-hosting gig in LA every once in a while.

i guess 11:30 means no more masturbating bear.

"Who will CBS target as David Letterman's heir apparent?"

Two words: Jon Stewart

Here is a link to the aforementioned Conan interview with Carter....(NYT registration required)

I don't think Conan would work in LA. Let's hope he stays in NYC. As for Letterman, as much as I love him, he's gotten weirder and weirder lately. He seems like he just doesn't care anymore. And what's up with Schaeffer -- he's a nutjob. Stewart seems like a logical replacement for Letterman -- though I don't know how I would choose. Conan or Stewart?

This is some of the best news ever! It also means that--for all intents and purposes--the two big late night talk shows at 11:30 will FINALLY be based back in NYC! The whole damned format started here! Conan is much more like Jack Parr and Johnny Carson than Jay Leno has ever been. We need some real people back on the air, and this guy. Man! This is great!

This is one of the best pieces of entertainment news ever! FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!!

My robot is on the toilet in his honor.

Which to choose?

in 5 years, TiVo and the like of digital tv recorders will so permeate our lives that we can easily get the meat and potatoes of both shows.

mmm...meat and potatoes

But will Conan suck at 11:30?

if CBS wants Jon Stewart, they should really take the *entire* Daily Show over, including Stephen Colbert, Rob Cordry, everyone. Jon Stewart is so good at what he's doing now, I'd hate to see him ditch his current format so he could do only celebrity interviews and "Pavoratti is fat" jokes.

TiVo?! If I had that, I'd never leave apartment.

My friends ... Elephant in the room?

Dave Chapelle needs an 11:30 slot!!

And ?uestlove is so much more beat savvy than Max Weinberg.

no, dirk ---- Tivo allows you to do just that:

leave your apartment, go outside, go to the gym at any time, and still come home to watch all your shows in a much quicker & more enjoyable setting. good stuff!

Has everyone forgotten Ted Alexandro? The genius comic is rumored to be Letterman's favorite to take over his spot.
