Is it illegal to bring and use a beer funnel in a public bar, provided you only use the beer purchased from that bar? Is there a national law, state law, or would it be the individual bar's decision?
Ask Gothamist doesn’t know of any national, state, or local laws that would prevent you from bringing a beer funnel into a bar (and we’re sure our readers will correct us if we’re wrong), but why would you do this? Beer funnels are strictly for frat houses. No self-respecting adult should be bringing a beer funnel to a bar.
We wanted to get a second opinion on the beer funnel issue, so we asked our favorite bartender about it. “Beer funnels would definitely not be allowed in my bar,” said Suzy, who bartends at Boat in Brooklyn. So it seems it would up to individual bars to enforce a no-funnel policy. It’s never a good idea to piss off the bartender, and we can’t imagine any bartender in the area who would welcome beer funnels at the bar. If you really want to drink beer through a funnel, funnel away in the privacy of your home. But if you’re going out to a bar, have some class and leave the funnel at home. And please remember to always tip your bartender well.

There was a bar on the Upper East Side (surprise, surprise) that has a couple of funnels for you to use. I think it was called Pat O'Briens, and it was on 2nd & 87th. I'm not sure if it is still there, or if they still have funnels.
Pat O'Briens is still there (but it's at 2nd and 88th) and I believe they still have a Natty Light Beer Funnel special.
We were innocently watching a baseball game there one day last season, when a bunch of already drunk, just-graduated-from-college-last-week types came in. A few of the guys proceeded to STRIP down to their undershirts, and the bartender got UP ON THE BAR to serve them funnels of cheap beer swill. I have to say, we left quickly and have never been back to this tacky frat house-like place.
I had to comment after seeing the unflattering review of my beloved bar Pat O'briens. It may not be the kind of place you take your mother, but it's a great space, with friendly bar tenders, the game's always on, and it's the perfect place to go when you're not looking to pay $8 a beer or change out of your flip flops. As for the tackiness, have you BEEN to the upper east side? It's atleast head and shoulders above the Big Easy or many others in the area. An occasional funnel, drink deals for the Red Sox games, and they'll set up a beer pong table whenever you ask. If you take it for what it is, then I say it's down right phenominal.
