Actually the NYDN article re Masa says that dinner there is $300, so lunch may be a more affordable option:

"Snagging a dinner reservation (at $300 a head) may be impossible, but lunch is more doable."

the best new lunch are the rice balls at Oms/b in midtown - on 45th between 3rd and lex. So good! And very different. You've got to try it.

To hell with the general public. I've been hitting Banh Mi So 1 for years, and I come off looking like the Lord of New York whenever I take visitors (out of town or otherwise) to this "secret Vietnamese place". Sometimes I'll even shoot all the way down through Little Italy and then bend back around, just so said visitors don't realize the place is only a few blocks from home.

They're ubiquitous in L.A. and top-notch. My faves are at Mr. Baguette. Although they don't serve fresh soda chanhs there, the bread is fresh baked, the meat is perfectly seasoned, and the veg is perfectly pickled. Worth the drive South down the I-5.

Banh mi have long been my go-to, envy-inspiring meal of choice when traveling on the Chinatown bus. I'd love if they were ubiquitous.
