Law & Order's 15th Season Begins

Chung chung! It's the moment Gothamist has been waiting for - at least since May 20 - it's the season premiere of Law & Order. And since it's the much ballyhooed CSI:NY vs. Law & Order smackdown on Wednesday at 10PM, NBC is rolling out TWO episode of L&O tonight, starting at 9PM. The first episode is "Paradigm":

Dennis Farina joins the cast as Detective Joe Fontana, a stylish veteran uneasily paired with Detective Green (Jesse L. Martin) when a former female Guardsman from the second Gulf War is found murdered -- and evidence points to the vengeful Iraqi sister of a an ex-inmate at infamous Abu Ghraib prison. However, when D.A.s McCoy and Southerlyn begin to prosecute, they discover that the suspect's lawyer boldly plans to defend his client as an "enemy soldier" -- subject only to the terms of the Geneva Convention. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg guest-stars as himself. .
Yes, the Mayor does guest star! Here's the Mayor's press release about his second appearance on the show [Gothamist on his first appearance].

The second episode is called "The Dead Wives' Club":

When a woman is found dead after a ferry collides with a Manhattan dock, Detectives Fontana and Green become suspicious when they learn that the victim sustained a blow to the head and was seen in the water just before the accident -- and the likely suspect is the ex-wife of a firefighter who left her to marry a rich "9/11" widow. But A.D.A. McCoy soon learns that the defendant's crafty lawyer intends to position her as a victim of post-traumatic stress syndrome owing to 9/11, meaning that McCoy has to overcome extreme emotions common to every New Yorker.
We hear that the L&O crew recreated a ferry crash on Governor's Island in August. It should be amazing to see.

We were reassured when the NY Times' Alessandra Stanley wroteDennis Farina's addition to the L&O cast is "seamless." But we will always miss Jerry Orbach. And we can't help but mention our monumental, "best day ever" visit to the set of Law & Order.

I love Joe Fontana. He's smooth talking, rich, charming, and a great detective. He's very passionate about catching bad guys and he's not afraid to push the envelope when getting information. His motivation is justice, even when he has to breaks rules to achieve it. I could hang out with his character. I'm glad the writers of L&O introduced him. Briscoe was too cynical a character for me and Fontana gives the show a different pace more to my liking.

Joe Fontana is cool. I love his character in the show. He's a smooth talker, stylish, loaded ("you should see his ride"), sophisticated, and a great detective. I like the fact that he's willing to tell white lies in order to get information. Even Green is surprised what comes out of his mouth. He's got manners too which I respect. Notice that he's always holding doors open for women or pulling out chairs when seating them. That's pimp! And of course, he's got the cash to back him up. He pulls out the wad of C-notes when him and Green have their first drink along with "reluctantly showing off" his Benz to Van Buren and Green and of course, his $300 silk Italian shirts.

I think L&O needed a character like this to change the pace of the show. Briscoe was emotional but too cynical. His character was just a little too slow for me. Fontana is cool and passionate about catching bad guys which I appreciate. I loved how he talked to that hotel manager on tonight's episode but later on, telling that woman "prego" after she said "gratzi". That's a smooth, charming, bad-ass.

I'm excited about how they're going to develop his character this season. Tonight was the first night that McCoy meets Fontana and Fontana makes quite an impression on him. I predict that him an Serena hook up. The writers always have her saying that she has a boring sex life and dialogue of that nature which is why Fontana would be great for her. Just a prediction on what the writers are going to do.

In short, the Joe Fontana character is cool and Dennis Farina was the perfect guy. Thumbs up to the L&O creators.

What makes Dennis the POPE of OLD CHGO, is not so much that he "was a cop". and is now a major celebrity, rather instead the fact that "EVEN THO", he "was a cop", and yes used to keep the barbarians away from the gates, you know: he actually protected the citizen's, in fact He Nikeas, etc. they actually went out of their way now and then to do something for us sinners, and that I might add they would do "without" trying to turn us into "rats", as there is nothing lower than a rat, except for maybe a child molester! Unlike T>V> which shows every favor granted by the "man" as a tradeoff for some "rat" job, Dennis and Co. were real men, and conducted themselves in a manner befitting that admonition.

Hi - we missed the last few minutes of the first episode!! How did the DA finish up at the trial? What was the last scene???

  • L&O

Jerry will be on the 4th version of the show filming in two weeks (don't know air date yet). Law and Order Trial by Jury

  • HTB

I think the first episode held up fine in terms of criminal investigation and courtroom trial drama. (Tivoed the second ep.) And I'm willing to chalk it up to introducing the Fontana character, but it seemed like that scene with Green in the bar tended towards gratuitous. L&O writers remember: one of the secrets of your success is to not delve too deeply into the lives of the characters.

And was it just me, or did the cinematography seem especially glossy?

It is supposed to start Mid-season. Serena is supposed to leave mid-season too. She is in the new movie with Sandra Bullock as a evil beauty pagent chick!

  • Rst

Karen, I think they are setting up Jack as the reason why Serina will leave.

Couldn't agree more about Farina, he's not much of an actor. When does Lenny's show start?

  • Karen

I don't usually watch the new shows, just the re-runs on TNT, but I thought I would give it a chance....YUCK! The new guy Dennis Farina showed about as much depth as a detective as Daphne on Scooby Doo. Serena’s hair looked really nice and she didn't try to stair her way through a scene too much. And what was up with Jack? Both episodes, he was just mean and unwilling to give a deal out. I also think he may be going bald since his hair was so long on top. Wow, maybe I shouldn't watch the new season sober anymore.

  • Jen

I like how Joe Fontana is a sorta a liar and a smooth talker. He's a throwaback to another era of detectives... My only concern is that he is so smooth... but maybe Green's niche will be youth/street issues. Note to L&O writers: More scenes with Green wearing his undercover leather jacket.

  • I haven't watched it yet but I'm really excited to because they apparently shot some of the season premiere in my company's office downtown. It'll be so weird to see my place of work on tv!

  • i dont like how he's treating jesse l martin like a rookie

  • i was really afraid for the show tonight but so far im loving dennis farina. so different from lenny & so mysterious. heh. i feel bad saying it, but jerry orbach's jokes were getting old. maybe ill start watching the new episodes now. i usually just watch reruns over and over on tnt.

  • L&O was filming right outside my office building on 43rd b/n 5th and 6th aves. today. Don't know which one. Didn't see any of the stars, either. Even had my digicam ready to snap if I did. Waited around for about 10 minutes, then heeded the siren call of lunch.

  • Farina's wearing a brown suit.

  • Ziegfeld

Speaking of L&O...my gf and I were watching SVU on TNT the other night, and it was an episode about an [apparent]schizophrenic haunted by the "kasheestees" (sp?). The cast had to repeat the word more than a few times...we wondered how they did so without cracking up.

Does anyone know the episode or whether it's become kind of a camp SVU classic?

  • Rose

I watched Law and Order the first few seasons.

Now I go to sleep around 10 pm.

Everyone in that photo looks great.

And like they are really, really serious about it all.

    "Chung chung!"?

Is that how you spell that odd Sound before Scenes?? Jen, I think it's safe to say your a Dedicated fan but "Chung chung!"?

    WoW!

    ;)

I'll miss Jerry Orbach, but I'm glad they got Dennis Farina who was a Cop in Chicago.

I liked him best as Cousin Avi in Snatch. His character still cracks me up everytime I see it!

    Jumping the shark=Dennis Farina

i love you for loving l&o.

tonight i'm especially excited: they filmed the beginning of the second episode at my grandpa's boat club. they paid him $250 to use his dinky motorboat for about 2 seconds worth of tv time.
