Gothamist's Div. 1A Top 15

As some of the top teams begin to play each other (FSU-Miami), we can finally begin to gain some insight into how good (or bad) they are. Some teams are without comments this week - if you blow out a cupcake, there's not much to say about that. Also, as you will see, our rankings can fluctuate from week to week - unlike the "real" polls, just because you win doesn't mean you won't drop in the rankings if your performance is unimpressive. See last week's poll.

1. Oklahoma

2. Miami – The offense is still ugly, and Brock Berlin does not seem any better than last year. However, the Defense is again formidable. Completely shutting down FSU after losing 4 first round draft picks on D is amazing. Still, they can’t run the table without better production from Berlin and the WRs.

3. USC

4. Georgia – We really like Georgia……….on paper. But they have been unimpressive on the field thus far this season and very nearly lost to S. Carolina. Maybe they will just be one of those teams that win ugly all year, but it will be tough for them to get through the SEC unscathed unless they improve.

5. Texas - We don’t really believe that Texas is this good, but this ranking is virtually by default. We don’t like any of the teams ranked below them that much either, at least not this early and we have to give them some credit for winning on the road at Arkansas.

6. LSU – Look for a loss at Auburn this week.

7. Florida – We’ll find out how good the Gators are when they travel to Knoxville this Saturday.

8. West Virginia – If Kay-Jay Harris’ injury is serious, that would be a big blow to the Mountaineers.

9. Fresno State – Simply based on what’s happened so far this season, we have to give some credit to the Bulldogs. Even if Washington and K-State are down this year, beating both teams on the road is impressive. This team is very capable of going undefeated if they can maintain their focus every week.

10. California

11. Ohio State – Continues to win ugly. Will have a very difficult time at NC State next week.

12. Minnesota – Gopher’s weakness, Defense, was on display this week after giving up 480 yards to D-2 Illinois State. That will catch up to them eventually, but this should still be a 9 or 10 win team.

13. Utah

14. Virginia

15. FSU – Bowden and Rix just can’t beat the Canes.

Knocking on the door: Tennessee, Purdue, Iowa, Auburn

nice job with the college football poll. thought i was one of the few in the tri-state who cared. two thoughts: first nice job getting utah and fresno state up, but what about boise state? don't hate on them just because of the smurf turf. they'll beat fresno state down the road. also could rutgers have gagged any harder? new hampshire? brutal.

Hey, Tien... how about a 1-AA poll? I know even less people in this area care about 1-AA than 1-A, but what the hell... local faves Fordham are in the Top 25... can any other school football team in the area say that? (Good guess... Fordham College '85)

i'll talk to my friend about him maybe including a few for 1-AA.

You're knocking me out here. (just playing with you...)

I appreciate the poll, too, and I promise it's more because I'm a college football fan in general than because I'm an Oklahoma alumna. Thanks for not calling Ohio State "OSU" this week ... us Big XII fans (and probably PAC-10, too) get a little confused.
