Controversy in Queens

Serena Williams lost a wild one to Jennifer Capriati last night in the women’s quarterfinals at the US Open in Flushing.

Williams was serving at deuce in the first game of the third set when her backhand passing shot was incorrectly called out by the chair umpire. Capriati took advantage, going on to win the game and eventually, the match.

Understandably, Serena was none to pleased with the call. "No!" Williams shrieked. "No, no, no, no. What's going on? Excuse me? That ball was sooo in. What the heck is this? It was not out. Do I need to speak another language?"

That was not the only questionable call Williams was on the short end of. Tournament referee Brian Earley said that the chair umpire that oversaw the Capriati/Williams match would not officiate another match at the 2004 Open.

Capriati had no sympathy for Williams. "That's what happens in tennis matches," she said. "That's the way it goes. I think I had some bad calls also. If you look back on the tape, I'm sure I was robbed a couple times on some baseline shots. I lost my service game on the next game, so it was completely even after that."

Serena will now join her sister Venus on the sidelines. Venus lost to Lindsay Davenport on Monday in her quarterfinal. Top seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne and second seed Amelie Mauresmo were also ousted, leaving the women’s side of the draw wide open.

Tonight’s big match will feature #1 men’s seed Roger Federer taking on sentimental favorite Andre Agassi in the men’s quarters.
