You can all swallow your arguments. That couple was released of any wrong doing and the child had an actual affliction that caused the lack of weight gain. It wasn't the Vegan diet. Eat your words. And, duh...vegans breast feed, even I know that. You're proving your ignorance for even thinking it isn't.

I am a friend of Raphael and Alexandra. They are not "stupid dirty hippies" as some fool above has labeled them. They are educated and caring people. They took very good care of their son, he was not malnurished (his weigh is being compared to formula fed babies) nor does he suffer from FTT. Below is a post that Raphael wrote if you care to know. what about christian scientists who refuse medical attention for themselves and their children because they believe that intense prayer and reading the bible/writings of mary baker eddy will cure them? religious insanity can be just as bad or worse, religion has caused more unnecessary death and misery over our human history than diet. remember, 9-11 was a "faith based initiative".

i admit this case is screwed up and the parent is a lunatic. babies need nutrition that a vegan diet doesn't provide. and i agree that only a fringe group would support that as an acceptable way to raise a baby. although i totally missed the part where people went 'bat shit' over religion. i was merely pointing out that, at the most human level, it's perfectly normal to understand food more than christianity.

Sterling, I feel for ya. Trying to make a good point (that people are clueless about religion) and once again people go bat shit. Granted, I agree with hijiki's agruement that one would die without food but not from lack of religion, but that misses the point. The fact that our society gives more importance to our eating habits than what we believe about God, humanity, morality etc is sort of scary, especially since we live in a time and country where they are quite important. Also, arguements based on some sort of fringe deitary group further shows how out of wack our country and our outlook is. Most people in the world are hungry and do not have the luxury to turn up their noses at what ever food is offered to them.

sterling, most people eat out of necessity as opposed to faith. you can choose a diet on faith, science, or need. many people are allergic to certain foods. i know people that are ovo-lacto vegetarians even though they raise beef cattle. that has nothing to do with faith. the point is that it's perfectly normal for people to know more about food than religion because food is necessary for life and religion is not.

So vegans dont breast feed? I like to remind these people that without our use of animals, most of them would be dead. Cures for polio, flu, TB, etc etc all used animals in the expieremental stage and productions of cures.

sterling, food is a necessity of life, religion is not. wherever you go, everyone eats. forcing presbyterianism on this child wouldn't kill it but forcing veganism could. i don't think there's anything strange about knowing about diets over religions.

We used to call the fruitarians Live Earthers. Or maybe they were some other special distinction, cause they consented to acts of violence like harvesting carrots, cutting a portion, and returning them to the soil (which I was told did not stop the carrot from growing, though it's not clear that the carrot did not undergo some massive trauma that required carrot therapy down the road). I also knew a food co-op in college that subsisted exclusively on dumpster diving and roadkill. Found Meaters, I guess I might call them.

What about Fruitarians? They make Vegans look like carnivores. They not only refuse to eat any cooked food, they will not eat any vegetables or roots--only fruit. They believe that cooking food is toxic, and eating plants is actually cruel to the PLANT (!). Even picking the fruit is considered bad. Only fruit that has naturally fallen from plants are allowed.

Oh, here it is. Can you imagine the conversation between two vegan stoners deciding whether to get this stuff for their dog? Trying to impose a moral framework on a domesticated predator species? This is crying out for a South Park episode. I'm sure everyone will jump of me for this, but I've long thought that it's pretty amusing that we all know the various denominations of vegetarians (vegans, ovos, lactos, lacto-ovos, fruitarians, etc.) and how they differ, but most Americans under the age of 50 couldn't coherently explain the differences between Catholics and Presbyterians or even Catholics and Church of Christers.

I saw vegan dog food at the local pet store recently. (Not kidding.) From the packaging details it looked to be intended for dogs with digestive tract problems. But the very fact that it's labeled "Vegan" instead of simply "Vegetarian" or "No Meat Protein" makes it clear that it's aimed at a certain variety of not-too-bright fanatic who can't accept his pet's carnivorous leanings.
