The Short (Hem) Line

Finally back from the depths of the convention to the kind of reporting Gothamist knows and loves from the NY Times: A story about wearing miniskirts on the subway - the etiquette, the opportunities costs, the freedom. With miniskirts hemlines high-high-high, issues like making sure one's bum and legs aren't contacting the subway seat and blocking others' views come up. It also seems that owning one miniskirt causes a need to own more and more, sort of multiplying like Gremlins. One problem Gothamist realizes the article does not touch upon is the issue of going upstairs, with people behind (ha!) you, especially when you're wearing one of those cute but not very flattering flouncy minis; our feeling is that you should just run up those stairs fast - but be careful. Sadly, there's nothing in the MTA's Rules of Conduct that discourages leers.

A great subway resource: NYC Subway.

Um, hello? Miniskirts are about leers, justice, and the American way. At least there isn't as much groping in this hemiisphere.

Okay, miniskirts are about being proud and showing off your legs. But there is a difference between a leer and an admiring looki...though I do agree some people can leer when you're wearing a Michelin-Man like snowsuit.

Women who wear miniskirts I'm sure have all sorts of reasons why they do so. Some of their reasons sound chirpy and happy and sunny, like oh, don't I look cute!

Well, miniskirts are not a "freeing" fashion. The lock women into abnormal movements as they go about their day because sooner or later they all worry about who can see what and when. And when they start thinking like this, well, the miniskirt has taken over.

So, miniskirts are another fashion that contributes to making women feel weak and vulnerable. More reasons for men to want women to wear them.

It is all about wearing really "covering" underwear on this one. Margaret Berry said it succinctly in her Morning News article: "Short skirts call for boy-cut underwear in a matching shade so viewers either aren’t sure of what they’re seeing or realize there’s not so much to see." But on the subway, it's all about having a sweater or something to sit on.

Sadly, the little rhyme "I see London, I see France..." is all too apropos.

is the bum covering just because it's a sanitary thing or out of respect for others? or is it that and the exposing your underwear?

Rose, you are kidding right? Right?!

Hey, don't kid yourselves. I wear minis because I want the leers. I like to see men startle and salivate. I don't believe any woman who says she wears a mini just for fashion or any other reason.

Does provocative clothing lead to sexual assault?

Discuss amongst yourselves.
