Republican Convention: Day 4 Notes

2004_09_rnclastday.jpg

Well, it's over. Over over over. President Bush accepted the presidential nomination from the Republican party and gave a speech that, as the NY Times, Washington Post, and basically any other news organiation, was sweeping and grandiose, yet very short on the details, especially for domestic policy issues. It's what the election has been shaping up to be all along: Watching out for terrorism (here and abroad) vs. fixing America itself. Sure, on a very basic level, the speech was "rousing", but that's what any speech at a convention is supposed to be, and Bush had a team of speechwriters behind him and a crowd of adoring fans in front of him.

Governor George Pataki also spoke last night, which could set up an interesting battle between him and Giuliani for the ticket in 2008. Meh.

There were protesters outside Madison Square Garden, and Standard Deviance examines last night's protester inside the Convention; she also notes that many delegates are giving their credentials to people, with one even handing credentials over to a Daily News reporter (at an ice cream shop), saying, "Go have fun."

Check out these news sources for more convention wrap-up. Gothamist finds this Associated Press photo extremely exciting. And most importantly, go out and vote on November 2. You may not think your vote counts this year, but it does and it never hurts to get in the habit.

Look at Bush's hands. It is not natural for a person to hold his hands that way. (Look at other people's hands in about a dozen other photographs). Does it not remind you of a gunslinger from those western movies? Does it not suggest some gullible-fearful people looking for a gunslinger to protect them would be manipulated by this picture?

Whatever you think of the Republicans, they do know how to manipulate people.

So much for our so-called liberal media which tore Howard Dean a new one after his infamous scream to a rally of his supporters but mostly let Zell Miller's hate filled manifesto (calling Kerry weak and wobbly and talking about those who hate America and are basically traitors to our country) pass with barely more than a chuckle. Dean's scream killed his campaign, Zell's zealotry will only enhance his image.

  • No way Pataki or especially Giuliani will be the GOP's presidential candidate in 2008.. they are both way too NY, too "ethnic" (sad as it sounds, Greeks and Italians are not quite perceived as standard White Americans by many of our citizens, especially the ones republicans hope to court) and most of all too far left to represent this party or appeal to the party's base on a national scale.

That was the basic dishonesty of this convention, as they spotlighted folks like Giuliani who is pro choice, pro gay rights and so on, and tried to reach moderates by pretending that is the face of the party, when so many of Giuliani's positions are anathema to the neocons running that show.

They pretty much kept all the hardcore right-wingers locked up in the basement, and oddly enough it took a democrat, Zell Miller, to finally give a glimpse the of GOP's loony true colors.
