Coolfer's Music Picks

If you're not busy either attending or protesting the RNC, there are more than a few things going on before the end of the work week. Tonight and tomorrow are particularly busy. The weekend isn't too bad, either, but things tend to calm down around a holiday.

Aesop RockTonight, the Bowery Ballroom is hosting a show to coincide with the Who's America benefit CD, released by Def Jux and System Recordings to raise voter awareness. The event, to be honsted by Chuck D, is presented by Def Jux, System and URB Magazine and proceeds will go to the League of Pissed Off Voters and Music for America. On the hip hop side of the bill are El-P, Aesop Rock (pictured), the Perceptionists and Hangar 18. On the dance side will be DJ stars Dieselboy + Kaos, Christoper Lawrence, Josh Wink, D:Fuse and Junior Sanchez.

Noise/post-punk legends Suicide play Rothko on Friday. Also on the bill are Free Blood (a !!! side project), Dead Combo (for fans of Jesus and Mary Chain's more gloomy moments) and Japanther. This, folks, will be a hot show.

Monday is a holiday for most of us, and you're probably wondering what you're going to do to merit sleeping in and laying on the couch for half of Monday. This is an easy one: stellastar* play the Motherfucker Labor Day bash on Sunday at the Roxy. The band's set is allegedly at 11pm and there will be DJ's sets by Miss Guy, Fitz, Michael T. & Justine D. and others. Tixx are $15 with invite (print this page), $20 without, there will be a Redbull/Absolut open bar from 10pm to 11pm, and don't forget the *.

Finally, all freeloaders should be at Pianos on Monday for a Paul Westerberg listening party. His album Folker is out on Tuesday. Coolfer is very unsold on it. There are some great highs, some lows and a lot in the middle. But hey, there will be free Red Stripe from 6:30 to 7:30, so what does it matter?

Oneida/Trans Am show is at the Knit tomorrow night (Thursday), not tonight.

Another great band Twin-A is playing at the Tribeca Rock Club Tonight at 9pm. They are playing with State Radio (featuring Chad from Dispatch).

Twin-A is a U2/Jeff Buckley/Coldplay sounding band... good stuff.
