Gardner Wins Bronze, Leaves Shoes Behind

In what would become the final wrestling match of his career, Rulon Gardner defeated Sajad Barzi in Greco-Roman heavyweight wrestling. Garder lost his chance to defend his Olympic gold from 2000 when he lost to Georgiy Tsurtsumia earlier.

After winning the bronze medal, Gardner removed his shoes and left them in the ring, a sign of retirement. As he left the mat, tears streamed down his face. Gardner's win over Aleksandr Karelin, a wrestling legend, in 2000 was so unexpected, and shocked the wrestling community. In 2002, Garnder lost a toe to frostbite and he almost died.

Looks like he really needed that toe.

"The toe he lost to frostbite sits in formaldehyde in a jar next to his bed at home, a constant reminder of how close he came to losing everything, which partly explains why he took his losses so well on Wednesday." Jesus!
