Coolfer's Music Picks

Gothamist readers, summer (if you want to call it that) is almost over. The season of free, outdoor concerts--many of which were ruined due to rain--has passed. Time to go back indoors, into the clubs, for the best music in the city. The week ahead looks fairly decent. Sure beats the Olympics.

When you think supergroups, don't think of Asia, the Velvet Revolver or the Three Tenors. Think of To Live and Shave in LA, an outfit with such luminaries as Andrew WK, Don Fleming, Tom Smith, Rat Bastard and Mark Morgan. They perform at Northix on Friday along with the Thurston Moore/Carlos Giffoni duo.

The WrensIndie rockers will have their Indie Rock Club membership cards revoked if they're not at the Wrens show at the Bowery on Tuesday. Meadowlands, the New Jersey band's latest, is so critically acclaimed even the Village Voice would come right out and use a postive adjective to describe it. They're the Slint of this decade; in ten years you'll talk about how you were there. Also on the bill are The Hold Steady and Travis Morrison (ex-Dismemberment Plan).

Soma, recent participants in the Gothamist Arts & Entertainment interview, perform at Sin-e on Tuesday. Of all the interviews, Soma elicited the most comments. If that's not a sign that the kids love them, what is?

And lastly, since Coolfer loves electronic music, today's final words will be on the Icelandic group Worm is Green. Automagic was released last year on Iceland's Thule Musik and found an American home this year on Arena Rock Recording Company. It's without a doubt one of the finest electronic/pop albums of the year (or last year), full of warmth and glitch and frail pop songs that may remind you of countrymen mum. Worm is Green will be at Pianos on Monday supported by Parenthetical Girls and Dynasty.

- The Wrens: "Everyone Chooses Sides" (indie rock for the indie inclined)
- Worm Is Green: "Undercover" (an orginal demo)
- Worm Is Green: "Automagic" (like Prefuse 73 gone minimal)
- We Regazzi: "A Lonesome 2nite" (spastic pop with electric piano)
- Soma: "The Latter Day" (Radiohead + Toad the Wet Sprocket + a little Merseybeat on the drums)
- Sharon Jones & the Dapkings: "Got A Thing On My Mind" (it's a clip, I know y'all hate clips)
