'The Warriors' To Be Remade

2004_08_warriors.jpg

Whoa whoa whoa: The seminal 1979 Walter Hill film, The Warriors, about warring NYC gangs is going to be remade! Tony Scott will direct the film, based on a screenplay by Sopranos writer Terrence Winter, which makes us think there will be some flashy car chases, lots of explosions, and bodies being cut up. The Hollywood Reporter says "Scott's version will follow the outline of the first film -- in which a gang leader is assassinated during a truce, and The Warriors, wrongly accused of the assassination, must make their way home through hostile gang territories -- while updating the heightend reality of the original film for contemporary audiences. " Gothamist's questions, which are really veiled demands: Will it be set in New York City? Will it be filmed in New York? Can you really remake that film for contemporary audiences used to clean subways or safer Coney Island?

Terrence Winter's bio notes that he's from Brooklyn, went to NYU and got his law degree from St. John's. He also co-wrote the Pine Barrens episode with Tim Van Patten.

Warriors...... come out and play-ay-ay!

now if only someone would reamke Pelham 1-2-3 we'd be in 1970s bad NYC noir heaven.

I'm fairly certain I saw a remake of "Pelham" on tv the other night...I only saw a few minutes but I think it had Edward James Olmos and that guy from the West Wing...not sure though...

If they remake The Warriors, will it still be the same if they take out all the hilarious gangs, like the Baseball Furies? I hope that they still decide to film all the scenes around 72nd street, but it probably wouldn't have the same seedy look now as it did then...Gray's Papaya will still be there, but the Urban Outfitters and North Face might change the atmosphere a bit...

Here's a list of other good NY movies from the '70 and '80s.

This is old news. First reported a couple of years ago...

can't wait for the videogame from rockstar games either! (no, really)

Un. Necess. Ary.

This is so upsetting! The best part about the Warriors is it is both wonderful and funny and horrible, simultaneously.

And yeah, they better keep the Furies. And the Lezzies.

Gah!

...and the cast of 3-2-1 Contact better still be included...

This film was remade. It was called the Gangs of New York :) The whole campiness of the original is so tied to the types of gangs and the time. I can't imagine a contemporary version.

there's no way the remake will do anything but suck.
All the kids will be artfully & attractively multi-culti. And I mean come on, how the hell will they make the city look scary and foreboding? unless its set in 2040 and the rats and cockroaches have taken over.......

I've read that "The Warriors" was a "remake" of Xenophon's "Anabasis."

Have not seen either, though.

My fave Warriors scene was when a young Deborah Van Valkenburg (soonafter cast in Too Close For Comfort opposite Nancy Dussault and Jim Jay Bulloch and a buxom Lydia Cornell) was sitting on the subway, staring at the young preppy princess. She wipes the grime of a long night off her cheek and we are intimately a part of her class envy. So best.

Why can't these Hollywood producers have an original thought! How much are these morons being paid? This remake is going to suck big time. Another classic movie destroyed... next they'll be redoing "C.H.U.D."

I'm sure eventually, every movie ever made will be "remade".

I don't think it's legal now for groups as large as the gang meeting at the beginning to gather. Maybe this remake will be much shorter and involve tazers...

I never hears about Te Warriors being remad, that is awesome , if this movie woild be remade and hopefully it does I will go and see it twice three times and even four times, plus id tel my homies to go see it. This is the first time I heard about it and it sounds like a good idea. some one should maka a move.

I agree with the others who feel the new warriors will suck balls. Why dont these big production companies come up with an orignal idea for once. Instead they keep ripping off classic movies and ruining them . There is no way in hell the remake will be even half as good as the real warriors. Rip Fox.

Sup watz this site about

In the remake, I hope the Lizzies get a gun that shoots straight. They could also use some outfits from Bebe, that would complete the total package!

Well to be truthful i love the warriors and i hate to see it re-made after all that i herd about it. No orginal gangs, not in NYC, in LA, not in 1979, in 2006, no more hand to hand, mostly guns and shit. im pissed off
