Gatlin Wins the 100; US Loses Women's 100

In the fastest field in Olympic history, Justin Gatlin beat out four other runners who also had times under 10 seconds, including Maurice Greene. The 22 year-old Gatlin was born in Brooklyn and shows the bravado that all sprinters have. After the race, Gatlin said, "I had been watching people make history like Maurice Greene, Marion Jones. That's what I'm trying for, to be the greatest of all time."

After the race, Gatlin's coach confirmed that he was the track coach that got the BALCO snowball rolling. Trevor Graham was the coach of Tim Montgomery, now banned, Marion Jones, and six other athletes that have been banned.

Saturday, Yuliya Nesterenko from Belarus won the women's 100, ending a streak of American victories in the 100. Lauryn Williams of the United States won the silver and Veronica Campbell from Jamaica was third. Several of runners who were at the 2003 worlds did not compete yesterday because of positive drug tests. Marion Jones, the defending Olympic champion didn't even qualify for the 100.
