Public Transport Gets Frozen During Convention

2004_05_pennstation.jpg

Sure, most people expected bus routes around Penn Station to be rerouted, and given the MTA's and the Mayor's earlier insistence that things would be pretty normal (yeah, right!) during the convention, it was inevitable there would be talk of rerouting subway service coming. Granted, the current plan is that four of the eleven entrances to Penn Station will be closed and any other disruptions would be prompted by the Secret Service, but Gothamist foresees the MTA bypassing 34th Street at least once during the convention "just in case" - and frankly, we won't mind because we're all about avoiding the convention when possible because there's nothing like a bunch of raging convention delegates and protestors to inspire a case of the agoraphobia.

For more about the bus routes affected, go to the TA. NY Newsday's Convention Guide is priceless for the picture of the yippie alone.

The Port Authority is also closing the walk/bike path over the George Washington Bridge for 9 hours each day (overnight) during the convention. So it will be extremely hard for cyclists to cross between New York and New Jersey. They still will allows thousands of cars over the bridge which is strange if security related to the convention is the reason. I guess cyclists are considered a bigger threat.

Here is some detail:

I urge people to contact the PA and their state government about this.

Inevistable? Is that some kind of fruit?

Ugh, that sucks about closing the GWB to cyclists. It sets a bad precedent.

Seriously, do our public officials get it?! I hate to use this phrase, but "the terrorists have won!" We're terrorizing ourselves into locking down our society and eventually creating a police/surveillance state. This whole "war" on terror (what a ridiculous concept if you actually think about it) is a joke. It will NEVER end if they continue "fighting" it this way. By then our democracy will be finished and our freedom gone.

You can keep on killing mosquitos, but unless you drain the swamp, you're not going to solve anything.
