Coolfer's Music Picks

It's a good week for live music, kids. Check it:

Tonight, the Angel Orensanz Foundation hosts what should be a great show. Stephin Merritt (that's Mr. Magnetic Fields to you), Dudley Klute and LD Beghtol perform as The Three Terrors in one of the city's most unique venues.

The legendary Guided By Voices

Ohio beer drinking machine Guided By Voices stop by Pier 54 tomorrow for the what should be a loud, drunken and fun gig. The indie rock legend's next and final album, Half Smiles of the Decomposed, will be released next Tuesday. What are the odds singer Rober Pollard will have his cans of beer on ice and stored in some kind of large container for maximum chugging during the show? I've seen a big igloo on stage. I've seen them use garbage buckets. GBV is very BYOB. Also on the bill is local band Ambulance Ltd. Show starts at 7pm.

Indie singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens drops by the Mercury Lounge tomorrow and Friday. If you're planning on going, keep in mind that his area shows have been selling out and he's more popular every time he comes back to town. Tickets are $10 each night and can be purchased on Ticketweb.

On Saturday, New Yorkers have more shows to choose from than is fair to the people of lesser, more boring cities (which will remained unnamed, but we all can think of a few). Among the highlights are the Mooney Suzuki at Northsix. This local garage rock band (or whatever you want to call them) have a new album coming next week that was produced by The Matrix (of Avril Lavigne fame). Surprise! They did a great job. The album is superb, and this is one of the best live bands in town, so don't flake. Also, blogger faves Sea Ray are playing the Mercury Lounge with Australians The Everyones (who opened for Jet last month) and the Mobius Band. That should be a fun show as well.

On Sunday and Monday, Golden Smog will perform at the Bowery Ballroom. This incarnation of the band features Gary Louris of the Jayhawks, Kraig Johnston of Run Westy Run, Marc Perlman of the Jayhawks, Dan Murphy of Soul Asylum and some of their friends. So basically this is the Asia of roots/alt.country/rock scene. Yes, it's a supergroup.

Then, on Tuesday and Wednesday, everybody's favorite evangelical rock band, the Polyphonic Spree, drop by Irving Plaza.

And these won't suck either:

- Ekland/Dub Trio at Pianos, tonight
- Donovan at Joe's Pub, tonight and tomorrow
- Rush at Radio City Music Hall, tonight and tomorrow
- Shade/Inevitable Breakups/Aerovox at Pianos, Friday
- Stiff Little Fingers at Irving Plaza, Friday
- Cylob at Europa, Friday
- Clogs/Eric Friedlander at Joe's Pub, Saturday
- Sons of Sound at Pianos, Saturday
- Grey Does Matter/Man In Grey/Bamboo Kids/Kid Casanova at Delancey, Sunday (the 7:30pm show is preceded by a free BBQ on the roof at 5:00pm)
- Ozomotli/Kinky at BB Kings, Monday
- Bad Wizard/Brant Bjork at Southpaw, Tuesday
