Munson Diner Closes

2004_08_munsondiner.jpg

The chrome and blue exterior of the Munson Diner may not be any longer: eugonline notices that it is now boarded up. This makes Gothamist wonder about the fate of the the boxy diner, which are ubiquitous off many an American highway, but are happily incongruous in the vertical city, especially Manhattan. These days, when they are built, it's more a marketing gimmick (Brooklyn Diner in midtown), than out of function.

Forgotten NY has a nice page about many NY diners of a certain class - chrome and 50s/60s looking. eugonline also had a link to Kullman, the modular builder whose product offerings shaped the drivescape and our blue plate special experiences.

I used to live around the corner from the Munson Diner, and ate there nearly every day. It was Hopper-esque, to say the least, and a true New York landmark. It's a real shame that it's gone.

Does anyone know if it's up for sale?

A landmark! Can't believe it's gone. Had many a ggod meal there at a fair price. ALl of NYC is being taken over by these trendy $15 burger joints. RIP Munson. I knew you well.
