Coolfer's Music Picks

Alex Chilton of Big StarCoolfer hasn't attended a music festival since the 1995 edition of Lollapalooza, but this Saturday's Little Steven's International Underground Garage Festival is promising enough to prompt a ticket buy. Most bands won't play more than a few songs, but the line-up is amazing and mixes the old and new very well: The Stooges, the New York Dolls, the Strokes, Chocolate Watchband, the Pretty Things, Big Star (Alex Chilton is pictured to the right), the Raveonettes, the Romantics, the Mooney Suzuki, the Fuzztones, the Shazam, the Electric Prunes, the Star Spangles, the High Dials, the Dictators and too many more to mention. That's a lot of bands for $20 ($25 at the gate). The concert will be held at Randall's Island. Gates open at--are you ready for this?--10am. Show starts at 11am. It's gonna be a long day, and a very long day if the rain hangs around through the weekend.

Tomorrow night, A.C. Newman (of New Pornographers fame) hits the Bowery Ballroom with Rogue Wave. Newman's album sounds like a NP record minus Neko Case (more or less), so no big surprises are in store. Rogue Wave's recently re-released album is being called a like-minded follow-up to the Shins' Chutes Too Narrow. To top it all off, tickets are a mere $13.

Sonic Youth plays the dreaded Webster Hall on Friday. Sonic Nurse is generally regarded to be the band's finest album in years (I'd have to agree) and personally I feel the live show has received a good kick in the pants since Jim O'Rourke joined the band. OK, there was that one miserable performance opening for Wilco at Summerstage, but that was an exception. They're in fine form these days. White Magic (on Drag City Records) and Magik Markers will open the show.

Two other Bowery shows are coming up, but they're both extremely sold out. The Killers, who have got to be the most buzzed about band this side of Franz Ferdinand, drop by on Monday and the Libertines play on Tuesday. At Craigs List's ticket section, there looks to be more buyers than sellers for the Killers. Good luck.

  • Doh! I thought I clicked on a link to Coolfer's site, lol.. sorry for the repetition.

  • You left out Nas at Central Park Summerstage! Sunday at 3PM

As I said at Gothamist, Nas is not known as the best live performer, or even close.. but having an rapper of his stature give a free show in the park is pretty rare..
