Yes - it's not easy for sure. One possible option might be to reduce the number of posts visible on the page and upping the JPEG size to say 50k. That could work... Whatever. Am enjoying the ride so far.

tell me about it! i take 100 shots for the eating in column and only come out with 10 or so that are decent. having the luxury of taking more than a few shots in a restaurant isn't a reality, unfortunately.

Another issue with images on Gothamist is that we are very careful that the images don't exceed 25KB or else it slows down the site, so some might be saved as "JPEG Low." Sucks, yes, but we want the site to be speedy!

Also, shooting food is HARD. Really, lighting and such.

Thanks for the tip about pixels and such -- we'll try our best, but we each use our own cameras, so the quality may vary. Know anyone who'd want to donate a high-quality digi-cam to the cause?

Sounds great - but is there any chance of Gothamist investing in a better digital camera? Seems the outdoor/daylight shots are working, but the indoor chaps look a bit amatuerish. An increase in pixels might work.

Personally, if something turns out bollocks, I retouch with 'enhance' in iPhoto on a Mac, resize in Photoshop and publish. I'm no geek, like, but I just don't wanna publish shoddy shots. Gothamist, should do likewise.

Actually the oysters ain't too bad, it's the previous post I was a bit 'disturbed' by.
