Rockaway Beach

2004_07_rockaway.jpg

While the city doesn't seem like an oasis for surfers, Rockaway Beach in Queens is just a subway ride away for some waves. Reader Jade sent us this great photo (above) of someone doing just that, and we did a little research for any readers interested in going to the Rockaways. The NYC chapter of Surfrider has information about the surfing scene there, and NY magazine once featured Rockaway Beach as an urban vacation. Rockaway community leaders are currently fighting with the city over alleged harrassment from Parks workers to residents, who want access to the beach until 8PM (the current closing is 6PM); the city's main issue is that there may not be enough lifeguards.

The city on the Rockaways and more Rockaway news from Rockawave. And of course, lyrics to the Ramones song, Rockaway Beach.

To the reader Jade- that is a great photograph... do you sell your photos? Cause I would be interested in buying.

one of my favorites - the beach is virtually empty and you don't have to deal with those god-awful insane crowds on the LIRR.

transplanted to SF a few years ago.
I miss surfing rockaway. :(
