Food Porn?
We recently encountered this sign while walking down 8th Street in the West Village. Titillating, no? We had been seduced by Gray's Papaya, yet again. If you haven't stopped in for one of their juicy, delicious, and dirt cheap hot dogs, you should, and at the very least, you should walk by, if only to check out their signs. They've often got a political bent, and are changed based on news, events, and NYC happenings.
Even Babbo co-owner Joe Bastianich is a regular: "he eats here twice a week at least. 'It’s cheap, and even if it cost three times more, I would still frequent it.'"
And how could you resist this smiling face? (Okay, we're getting a little creeped out by all the smiling food . . . what's up with that, huh?)
Gray's Papaya, 402 Sixth Ave at 8th Street, West Village, (212) 260-3532.

The Gray's Papaya on 72nd and Broadway used to have a lot more food porn around it. Now I think they tone it down -- too many impressionable toddlers in the neighborhood.
For those of us who are too slothful or phobic to leave the house, Fresh Direct offers Gray's Papaya hot dogs -- a tad more expensive, but probably the best supermarket hot dog we have ever eaten.
Yes, I'm a Gray's Papaya fan, though I am really partial to Crif Dog. Both are great though and you can't beat Gray's Papaya for cheap and fast. At home though I'm all about the veggie burgers.
Crif Dog also has some soft-core porn going on, as their sign consists of a bikini-clad woman riding a giant hot dog. but the reason to go is the best hot dogsin the city and the waffle fries which almost make up for the shameful lack of Chick-fil-A in NYC.
