Mets Lose to Expos by Three Figgies

While training camps open for the NFL later this week, the Expos and Mets did their best attempts to mimic a football game last night. Things were so bad for the Mets that they tapped Todd Zeile to pitch the 8th inning. He did only slightly worse than Scott Erickson, the Mets starter. Zeile gave up 4 hits, 5 runs (all earned), and two walks. His ERA is now a delightful 45.00. Erickson threw for only 2 innings and gave up 6 earned runs on 7 hits.

Despite the score, the game was actually close...until the 3rd inning when the Expos scored 7 runs and batted around. That's Ugly and the Mets had no alibi. If you're looking for some positive aspects of the game (there were some, but Gothamist had to look long and hard at the box score), you would be happy to know that Richard Hidalgo had two home runs and David Wight hit his first career homer. It ends about there.

On the plus side, the Mets out-homered the Expos, 4-3. It was an ugly game by both teams, but something one comes to expect for the Expos. Spanning June and July, the Expos played 26 games in a row away from Montreal and play in front of more people when they travel than they do at home - last night, 6,643 fans were at Olympic Stadium. Despite these factors, the Mets couldn't beat the Expos. Can't win at home, can't win on the road, where can the Mets win?

[sigh] This is that time when I fear the worst for our more interesting NY team. I saw them blow a late inning lead this weekend to the Braves. They've got the talent, they just need to pull it together. C'mon guys!

I can only think of one way the Mets can lift my spirits at this point: quit playing baseball, and start making prison movies.
