SP -- I referred to the rivalry as an allegory; perhaps you don't understand what is meant by that.

Your earlier posts aren't exactly the most sophisticated...

this just in: sports aren't really that important but rather a tool to forget the horrors of everyday life. i will agree to a truce of sox/yanks as long as we get bush out of the white house.

by the way, why isn't gothamist one of the bloggers at the convention? You guys are awesome and reportedly well-known, since you've been covered.

word, you will die someday too. thats really not much of an argument. as for the whole republican / democrat thing, how old are you? 8? how overly simplistic is your mind? the sad truth is, all the owners are probably republicans, and the same can probably said for the players, aside for carlos delgado, who refuses to stand up for "god bless america" in opposition to the war in iraq. good for him.

steinbrenner is an evil man (was implicated in the watergate scandal), but about as great an owner as you can ask for. he wants to win, and has made it his personal mission to improve and invest in his team. this in spite of the ever increasing luxury tax, which is distributed back into the mlb.

other owners are much worse, because they truly run their teams like businesses, trying to keep costs low, cutting corners and not putting any of their own money into the asset that wins games: players. the yankees are great for baseball, everywhere they go the crowds are larger than for any other teams. while other owners publicly lambast steinbrenner, behind the scenes they love him for the money the yankees bring in when they visit. look at oakland, theyve been a contending team for years but no one shows up for the games unless the yankees are in town. look at the diamondbacks this year, they can barely get 15,000 people in but when the yankees were there they sold out every game.

there is a lot of hypocrisy and sadly a lot of corporate control by boards of directors who have no interest in the game other than concessions sales. they choose to not spend any money because that means higher profits. great example, the tribune company that owns the cubs: they own the park, the team, the radio station the news paper and the tv station, and yet with all that income they could care less about spending any money on players because they know that win or lose fans will show up. and yet they cry year after year and talk shit about the yankees and other "big market" teams. the same is true for the twins, and pretty much all the other "small market" teams. what a bunch of bullshit, and yet the fans eat it up with a spoon. its just another example of uneducated masses believing the coporate spin instead of being informed.

you can accuse steinbrenner of a lot of things, but you cant say that he doesnt love the game, doesnt love his team and doesnt love to win. and the red sox are probaly the most hypocritical of them all. they cry "small market" when they have just as much money as the yankees, the highest cost per ticket per game, anb sell out every game at home. and their owners? john henry etc. were the owners of the florida marlins when they expanded the mlb. they bought their roster and won the world series, then gutted the team and made huge profits at the gate the following year. so please, dont try to tell me they are the good guys. you are simply wrong.

I am not a Yankee fan. However, I do admire their teamwork and dedication to winning. I do not see the over-sized egos, that I see on other teams that do not do as well.
I do not like Steinbrenner. But I do admire that he is willing to put his money where his mouth is. And it is his family money that he is spending.

Some jerk like Bush--he spends other peoople's money and other people's lives. He takes no responsibility for what he or his staff do. There is always someone else to blame.

Why would you be proud to be a yankee fan? it's ridiculous to say you're cheering for a team that has more money than everyone else. it's no fun if money takes all the fun out of baseball. where's the drama when you load a team full of all-stars? it's unbelievable that yankee fas are so spoiled and they just rub it in everyone's faces. oh, and just so you know, you haven't won in 4 years. and you won't for a long time. no matter how much money you spend. because steinbrenner is cursed and will die. and won't be able to spend any more money.

Here's a good article about the Sox, far more eloquent than I am:

You know, having been blessed by God to be a Yankee fan for all of my life, I've heard this Yanks/Republicans thing before (yawn) but I find it ironic this year that it's the Republicans and the Red Sox (both picked by "experts" to have big years) who have no record to run on (well, a record of futility and empty promises, but you get the idea...) BTW, does Curt Schilling EVER shut up? Nice move, I won't go in the trainers room and bawl, I'll do it RIGHT HERE in the EMPTY DUGOUT in my BRIGHT RED SHIRT for ALL THE WORLD TO SEE because ITS ALL ABOUT ME.

He would make a good Republican.

SP: I agree with you to a point. Varitek was out of line. He shouldn't have gone after A-rod. But Alex has to share SOME level of culpability. Not all, but some. Varitek, normally an intense player, was all fired up, on the bad side of a big game, and tensions were a bit high. What did A-rod think saying "fuck you, fuck yourself, come on" (my lipreading version, could vary from actuality, but the gist is exact) was going to get him? A face full of catchers mitt. As a Red Sox fan I am not particularly proud of it but as a baseball fan I am not even remotely surprised.

Interestingly, A-rod, by provoking Varitek, fired up the Sox to the point where they were able to win that game, and the carryover likely helped them win last night as well. Again, I am no fan of the brawling, but have to admit it worked wonders. I feel like sending A-rod a bottle of wine.

Dudes, Steinbrenner doesn't let the Yankees have any facial hair aside from mustaches, and they can't wear their hair long. They may as well be wearing suits.

Damon's hair & beard is a statement directed at that blowhard & the clowns that are willing to work for him.

The Yankees have ruined baseball! Boring, bland & corporate. The Sox have character and soul, and make baseball worth watching.

The Sox-Yankees rivalry is a perfect allegory for the Presidential race this year. Like Kerry, the Sox have a lot of money, but not as much as the Republicans/Yankees. Cheney was at Yankee stadium for a game a few weeks back, while Kerry was at Fenway last night. A classic good vs. evil (well, perhaps merely a lesser evil) struggle. The Sox will win in the end.

Jen, Alex was walking to first base, and he is entitled to scream and curse as much as he wants to after being plunked. He didnt walk towards the mound threatening the pitcher, which is when the catcher is supposed to step in. Varitek was totally out of line, and he is the one who started the hostilities. I think it would be best for the people of Boston, and for baseball in general, if the Rod Sux were just shut down entirely. No baseball for them, for about 10 years, then, start a new team, in the National League, with a new name, playing in a new park. Its the only way to end the evil that is a cancer in baseball. They are poisonning the game.

It is amazing how much energy is wasting on rooting for one team versus another. So what? You don't got anything better to do in your life? (The answer to that may be "no" for some people). Why not root for everyone to do well and let the best team win? Why waste energy on wanting someone else to lose?

To be fair, A-Rod was being a brat, though he was beaned and though Varitek didn't have to shove him. What I loved was the Sportscenter coverage of the fight, with someone noting that A-Rod kept dropping the f-bomb, because I think "f-bomb" is a funny phrase...the other thing was how Schilling was weeping after game 1 but entered the fight fray (I think). And yes, it is rare that Mariano lost the save, but them's the breaks.
