CI was far better pre 1993 when the Army Corps of Engineers pushed the beach sand up to boardwalk thus depriving fun-loving citizens of an excellent spot to conduct nefarious activities.

mrnyc is spot on. economic boon and inevitable cycles. i remember going to the mermaid parade back in the day. this one year, as the procession moved down to the water to open the beach and throw fruit into the ocean, the latin kings were holding some sort of meeting in the water. they were in a circle, chanting somethinh and then all these half naked, painted hippies come throwing furit. one of the funniest juxtapositions i ever saw.

the drop in crime had nothing to do with the quality of life crackdown by guiliani. crime in evry city in the usa dropped just as much over that time period. and all the mayors and police chiefs also tried to take credit for it. lower crime in general had and still has more to do with the economic boom than police actions or lack of.

Coney Island is awesome. They show movies now at the coney island museum and I saw the new Troma film. They even gave everyone in attendance a free dvd! The freakshow is cool too and the Cyclone still gives me a big thrill. I can't wait to go back. I wish I would have gone to the Mermaid Parade. I blanked on that. I hadn't been in years and it was so much fun and nice.
