In yet another story about how NYC is safer today than it was 10 years ago, the Post looked at how Coney Island has gotten safer. Crime has dropped significantly, thanks to the quality-of-life crackdown during the Giuliani administration, plus the new Stillwell Avenue subway station and Keyspan Park, where the Brooklyn Cyclones play, Coney Island have contributed to the rebirth. [Dick Zigun from the community group, Coney Island USA, told the Post, "It used to be impossible to convince people that Coney Island was safe when the subway station scared the wits out of people. Now, we've got the coolest terminal in the city."] Gothamist happened to be struck by this line:
Clashes between the Bloods and the Latin Kings gangs have given way to a tourist invasion that intermingles Manhattan's middle class with Williamsburg's 20-something hipsters.Bloods, Latin Kings, yuppies, and hipsters - now that's a clash we'd be curious to see. For our money, the only thing consistently scary about Coney Island is the Cyclone, and that's fun.
Gothamist on plans to make Coney Island a year-around destination. Tien on a trip to Coney Island, Slice's Coney Island pizza picks, and Satan Laundromat's pictures of Coney Island.

Jesus. Remind me to disable images when next I visit this website.
Coney Island is awesome. They show movies now at the coney island museum and I saw the new Troma film. They even gave everyone in attendance a free dvd! The freakshow is cool too and the Cyclone still gives me a big thrill. I can't wait to go back. I wish I would have gone to the Mermaid Parade. I blanked on that. I hadn't been in years and it was so much fun and nice.
"Hey, Warriors!"
are you selling thompson t-shirts now, jake?
anyone who wants a thompson tshirt can have one made for a very reasonable price at my favorite site, www.neighborhoodies.com!!!
jake screams like a gurl!
I wish there was a .wav file to go with that picture.
the drop in crime had nothing to do with the quality of life crackdown by guiliani. crime in evry city in the usa dropped just as much over that time period. and all the mayors and police chiefs also tried to take credit for it. lower crime in general had and still has more to do with the economic boom than police actions or lack of.
Heh. I was reading this fast and I thought it said "guilty-of-life crackdown" instead of "quality-of-life crackdown."
mrnyc is spot on. economic boon and inevitable cycles.
i remember going to the mermaid parade back in the day. this one year, as the procession moved down to the water to open the beach and throw fruit into the ocean, the latin kings were holding some sort of meeting in the water. they were in a circle, chanting somethinh and then all these half naked, painted hippies come throwing furit. one of the funniest juxtapositions i ever saw.
CI was far better pre 1993 when the Army Corps of Engineers pushed the beach sand up to boardwalk thus depriving fun-loving citizens of an excellent spot to conduct nefarious activities.
who snuck their camera onto the cyclone? you're breaking the rules!
what?!? janelle! are you the kettle or the pot in this instance?
