Piazza Injured, Season on Brink?

Last night's 9-7 defeat at the hands of the Marlins was worse than the final score. The Mets were down 6 runs after half an inning, as the Marlins jumped on starter Steve Trachsel. In the second inning, Mets catcher first baseman Mike Piazza injured his wrist in the field while attempting to catch a ball thrown by Ty Wigginton.

Piazza's injury is currently diagnosed as a sprain, but will be re-examined later today. His injury makes one wonder if the Mets can succeed without him. Last year, Piazza missed nearly half the season with a groin injury, which didn't help the Mets. Piazza is playing first base to lengthen his career and keep him playing every day. With the injury, the Mets lose a major cog in their offense.

That sinking sensation Mets fans are feeling is the Mets under .500 again for the first time since July 1st. Armando Benitez notched another save in the victory (box score), his 32nd, and his 8th save against the Mets in 8 opportunities. He had 33 saves in 2002, his last full season with the Mets.
