I know of a sure-fire way to make cart inspections more effective: hire more inspectors. But that would requier a larger budget, which would require either higher taxes or cuts elsewhere--and we all know neither of those are going to fly. So it's no surprise there are so few inspectors for so many carts. New Yorkers, like Americans everywhere, love their city services but don't like to pay for them. As for the Post's "probe," it looks pretty weak. Anecdotal evidence is seldom convincing. If the Times did a probe I'm sure we'd get to the bottom of it. I mean, how good can a New York Post probe be when the article is limited to 300 words?

I lived in NYC for 5 years before building up the courage to get my lunch from a cart. Glad that I finally took the plunge -- the $3 chicken pita from the cart on 53rd and 3rd is delicious, and has never left me feeling ooky later in the day. Besides, I'm probably less scared of food that I see prepared in front of me than food that emerges from an unseen kitchen.
