The Last Meow

2004_07_meow.jpg

City Rag, lately reporting all sorts of downtown institution closings, has photographs of Meow Mix's now permanently closed doors. The Lower East Side lesbian bar shut down its East Houston Street venue due to too much tangling with the city (random fines and closing) and flooding, as well as the smoking ban, but its owners will announce their new space at the end of the month on their website. Look for Meow Mix to return in mid-August (just in time for the Convention).

Meow Mix was immortalized in Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy as being just a club to two clueless Jersey boys. Read the script, via Drew's Script-o-Rama.

Hey Lesbianmagnet, what the hell do you think this comment section is: Savage Love? Go tell Dan Savage about your delusions of grandeur and then go back to your first person shooter game and cap yourself in the ass.

I might buy the self-righteous indignation on the part of lesbians if they didn't hit on me all the time when I'm escorting (rather innocently I might add) bisexual and lesbian friends to varios lesbo hotspots. Butch, femme, doesn't matter--they all apparently love this straight man. Gay guys too, for that matter. Does this make me an honorary queer?

Good lord, Meow Mix. For the last few years it's mostly been notable as the place to go if you want to get hit on by a straight guy who thinks he can score a lesbian who just needs the right man (or subsection thereof). See jake? You're not the only one who had those teenage dreams, and so many more dudes actually followed up and drooled greasily on the dykes. Maybe if they change the name and are secretive about the new location, all the choads will lose track.

Meanwhile, Henrietta Hudson actually managed to attract some younger, less fannypack'd women... or at least everyone who doesn't want to truck out to the slope. It just goes to show: dyke bars are always in a shortage, and they almost always go downhill especially when there are straight male hipsters around, and therefore you can't tell who's going to be where from one year to the next.

    (Girl Bar>Cubby Hole>Meow Mix - that's about it Jake)

  • Chasing Amy reference, nice!

Okay Jake, let me give it to you "straight"...no self respecting hot queer chick would ever step into Henrietta Hudson's unless she was forced to at gunpoint by a mean blind date with a mullet and acid washed jeans AND a fannypack.

Meow Mix, in its first 3 years, was a hotbed of freaks and queers...in other words: AWESOME.

Sometimes, early in their reign, Meow Mix DJ's would interrupt the steaming music and dirty grind dancing with: the Meow Mix commercial jingle...RIP ...meow meow meow meow...

  • god- so many of my teenage obsessions were centered on figuring out a way to get into meow mix at age 18- for some reason, we never got inside. we did, however, party at henrietta hudson a few times.

  • "just in time for the convention" Har! I'll be sure to pass the news to Mary Cheney.
