New Ipods Arrive; No Riots Reported

Given the hoo-ha in both traditional print media and in the blogosphere, one would think Apple had finally introduced the hoverPod (a flying skateboard with an IPod built in - Gothamist sent Steve Jobs our sketches months ago, but for a general idea, look at what the Modern Humorist did with the Segway, then known as "Ginger"). Not so: Apparently it's just a thinner, cheaper, longer-battery-life, lighter iPod. Bonus: In the pictures posted on Engadget and Gizmodo, it looks to have a cool blue backlight. While the new 'pods appear to be on sale at the online Apple store, on our walk to work this morning, there were no new models in the windows. If our experience with the iPod Minis is any guide, the new ones won't be hitting the shelves downtown for a couple of weeks and will never make it to the rest of the world.

Jason Kottke also spotted an amusing blog "jinx" going on at Engadget and Gizmodo. As of this morning, Weblogsinc boss Jason Calacanis had claimed the scoop. While both sites omit the exact time post on the webpages, they do include it on their RSS feeds. A quick consultation with BlogLines did support Calacanis' claims: Pete Rojas' Engadget did beat Gizmodo by posting the cover of Newsweek at 8:38pm. Gizmodo followed suit at 11:39pm. Of course, it's the game that matters, not who wins. Congratulations to both teams!

and as far as engadget being 48 hours late on the ipod scoop while gizmodo was 51 hours late with the "big scoop"..

I hear from my friends down at the Boiler Room that Joel is much larger and a much better lay than Peter.

actually on your mac if you just open up the darn Terminal.app and cd into the ipod's filesystem you can copy them all with no extra software... easy peasy.

Apple will tell you that you cannot put songs from your iPod back to a computer or other type of hard-drive. From what I understand, you can do this with some kind of software patch. Go online and check iPodlounge or some of the other iPOd sites. There are definitely ways to back these things up (umm, wasn't that in a song???).

iPods may be wonderful, however there's no denying they are YuppiePods.

Suckas!!! I got the 15G Dell DJ for $50 less than the 10G IPOD. I refuse to join the iPod nation!!!

I had a 10 GB pod (2G) die on me. Warning to all - fill out your extended AppleCare registration card unless you want to to hate Apple for a significant period of time.

I replaced it with an order for a 40 GB today. It's an, um, additional hard drive as well, so the expense makes sense. Rationalize rationalize.

  • I'm poor, hum to self.

I still have my 1st gen 5 gig iPod. It's a dinosaur compared to what's out there now. No problems with it so far...

  • i actually have the connection problems jake and lisa had. near the point where the wires from the ear buds connect, the sheathing breaks and the wires fray.

  • I was always frustrated that I couldn't back up the music on my iPod. For 'copyright reasons' Apple's help section for the iPod also says that there is no way to copy songs back off the device. This has been the main reason I have held off on the upgrade from my first generation iPod -- I have 1600 songs, and don't feel like burning them all again! Thanfully, after reading about this new release, I was energized to see if I could find a way to back up my music, and located some software that supposedly will let you copy your tunes back to your HD for PC and Mac for only $10. If anyone else has been frustrated by this [or am I the only fool who couldn't figure it out?], check it out:

I'm still walking around with my first generation 10-gig iPod (bought the week it came out). I keep swearing that I'm not going to upgrade until it either breaks or I run out of space (I'm at 8.9 gigs and counting), but I'm starting to crave this new one...

perfect timing, I had just decided that it was time to retire my very worn 2 year old 2nd gen 10 G iPod. Ordered one today: expected to ship 7/22 (fast for an apple new release). Never had a headphone wire problem; but did discard the remote from frayed wires. The wires are too long with the remote anyway.

  • they might not have the iPod in, but they had tons of the Airport Express in when I stopped by during lunch. Now I can wirelessly stream my iTunes audio to my home stereo. And sadly, their remote is crap anyway, no LCD display? comeon!

  • those fools at apple still haven't fixed this little problem i have with their remote/headphone wires: basically, after like three or four weeks of riding around with it in my pocket, the place where the remote wire connects to the jack starts to fray, exposing wires. according to apple, it's my problem, b/c its due to wear and tear. but i think the remote should be able to last a month without fraying. don't you?

I'm not going to follow the rest of the yuppie mac lovers and keep buying a New damn Ipod every 6 months. I Brought a Mini, Im happy with it, and until it breaks and wears out, I'll save my money.
