Gothamist Goes Sirening

siren_cross.jpg

Gothamist Arts & Events' Jen Carlson and Janelle Gunther headed to the Siren Music Festival and have some choice pictures from the hot Coney Island days of music (that's David Cross in the crowd, above). The NY Times' Kelefa Sanneh thinks concert goers were fortified/stupefied "by a potential toxic mixture of sun, beer and fried clams" (Gothamist loves the accompanying photograph by Rahav Segev which shows the Cyclone, fans, and Death Cab for Cutie). Carlson and Gunther, great pictures, but you left the fried clams out - what gives?

The festival was awesome this year. It's the first year I didnt roam around aimlessly and bored at any point. I stayed on the 2nd stage (Stillwell Stage) the entire day, except for a the first few songs by Fiery Furnaces which I quickly got bored of and headed back to the 2nd stage. The Stillwell Stage clearly had the best acts this year and its always got so much more room to move around, although this year it was getting more crowded (though I could still come and go from near the front and go all the way to the back for the portoloos and be able to get right back to where I was up front again). Highlights of the day for me were The Constatines, Mission Of Burma, ....And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead, and Electric Six. TV On The Radio were running late so I said screw it and went back to the 2nd stage since it was way to packed at the mainstage, which is no fun.

Every year the festival grows and I don't see how it can keep happening at Coney Island at its current pace. They should at least switch the stages around since the 2nd stage is on a wider street. I'd love to see it moved to Randall's Island.

  • it was difficult to get to see all the bands with the two-stage setup, and long lines for the restrooms. i really wanted to see the constantines and tv on the radio, but didn't manage to.

  • Hey that prick with the parking lot special Jane's shirt is Felipe from the band CHOLO. Hope Cross isn't associated with him or the shady dude inbetween them. :-)

  • More siren photos here. Best to just scroll down to them since they're not all one entry.

    Sorry, no clams.

What? No photos of ....Trail of Dead? They were great, threw stuff at the audience and everything. Too bad they were playing at the same time as Death Cab for Cutie.

  • it was too hot to eat, so we filled up on cold beer backstage...
