I love the irony of reading the follow-up comments to a well-written piece on-line. They're mostly fueled by bits of jealousy and shit-I-should-have-thought-of-thats. Nice work Ms. Elder, I can't wait for the book.

I think Rachel meant the Edwardians liked Victorian stuff, as Victoria came first. An interesting interview overall. I do prefer to see the Qs in a Q&A, though, whether they're Krucoff's Qs or someone else's. Entry points are important in this kind of feature, and many of this week's interviews meandered a bit too much for easy consumption. I might sit down and read them in a magazine, but I wouldn't like the challenge of getting through them every day on Gothamist. But I'm not flaming the experiment, which was a worthy one. Just one man's opinion.

Now that Gothamist has broken away from Krucoff's tired format, this is much better. K.Thor knows what he's doing. Very well done! Possibly the best writing and profiles on Gothamist ever.

Her NYC motto is obviously "I munch box" cause she's not really a she, right? That's a hard face, looks like a dude to me. But that's besides the point, don't you just love people who "intellectualize" pop culture? These are the people who have ZERO background in any sort of real discipline so they remark on tv, media, etc and you know what? Fuck them. This is the remedial version of "writer" -- better known as "blogger" even if she/he isn't one. The commentary here is boring and incredibly cliched. Now these interviews have taken a turn. Watch out Charlie Rose. However, historically, every turn-of-the-century, every culture relives all the trends of the previous. Maybe we're finally done with that stage an onto the fixations of the larger population....the boomer generation....like elder-sex.

Just to set the record straight, Elder does not work at VH1; she works in television production in New York City, but elsewhere. If Salon had this level of discussion about pop culture instead of acres of endlessly overdigested liberal pap, I might have renewed my subscription.

moges -- there's a documentary, merchants of cool, about a similar topic. it's about media drawing on teen culture to determine what's cool and then repackaging it and selling it to them again. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/ rr -- well, it was probably the questions that prompted the subject matter... so maybe they were just honest answers rather than a self-important rant.

she totally reminds me of that simpsons episode where marge is in the car talking about how she doesn't care if she's cool, and how that makes her cool... and her kids are all "pshhhaw." another language the disaffected youth carry on; the use/appropriation of simpsons social critique. you're all guitly or uncool.

First three paragraphs -- awesome. And you could write a whole book on this idea: "It�s like we are a culture of forgetting and simultaneously remembering. Because we are always feeling that we�re "missing" what�s happening, we make these clumsy attempts to show that we didn�t really miss "it" at all." I thought this was a great interview!
