It's official: Harlem is the new it-place for politicos or people with political connections. First Bill Clinton moves to 125th Street, and now Jenna Bush is applying to teach at Harlem Day Charter School on 123rd Street. No word on how the neighborhood feels. Gothamist would recommend that Jenna visit the Lenox Lounge first, as she gets acquainted with area bars. For more Harlem nightlife, here's Citysearch on Harlem bars.
Also, Jenna and twin Barbara will be in Vogue, revealing why they are on the campaign trail. But The First Twins website has more dirt.

hey, someone's gotta teach the kids how to binge drink. who better than an alcoholic's daughter?
ouch janelle. yunno the daughter of satan's pawn has feeling too!
Hey, folks, it's all about compassionate conservatism. All those poor, urban folk (in scary Harlem!) need all the help they can get since Dadddy did his best to make their lives worse the past four years.
I'd hit it.
Why can't I help but be a little skeptical considering that the announcement is made on the day of the NAACP convention, which her father totally blew off? I hate feeling [and appearing] ultra paranoid and so conspiracy-theory-looney when it comes to anything this administration says or does, but I think it's little more than a damage control PR move that stinks. Thankfully, even if a one-year stint teaching inner city kids happens to sway some of the children's parents to vote against their interests in the November election, there is still no way Bush will carry this state.
I'm with you Lana. I think it was also timed to soften the NYC protest blows expected at the Republican National Convention.
Expect many more photo-ops of Jenna w/ small black children -- a la Sally Struthers.
Jenna: Can you little dirt bags spell 'Jell-O Shots'?
What Harlem parent is going to allow their child in her class? She'll probably act like her father and never show up for work. I hope parents at Harlem Day vehemently protest and the gig is undone.
That F/911 sequence of African American members of Congress being shut down was scalding.
Right wingers gotta brush up on their minority relations ... boot out Cheney and put Powell in as VP (i know, never happen, but a girl can imagine a mildly less annihilating scenario, can't she?).
Have you seen how the Bush team is putting the Barbara photo-ops out there too? Those dimwits are being used to draw in the MTV vote. Even Uncle Grambo wants to mount Barbara.
Lana, of course, it's a PR move. Bush gave the middle finger to the NAACP, and now he hopes Jenna's one-year stint teaching in Harlem will partially make up for it. The Bush re-election campaign is all about pervasive PR and spin and damage control.
Is this part of her community service for underage drinking? Barbara made off easy - she gets to suck Zac Posen off instead.
with a bush teaching, won't even more children be left behind?
i was at an event for a charter school in harlem last year around this time and the bush niece was there. . .i understand the paranoia, but i think the family actually might have a history at that school, or schools like it.
I think we should give her the benefit of the doubt and see if she's still sticking with it six months into the school year.
The one thing we should not do is give the Bush's the benefit of believing them when they say their daughters are not public figures. Posing in Vogue automatically ends their status as "normal" citizens. Tabloid photos are one thing, but staged shots with designer gowns are another. I can't remember Chelsea posing in Vogue, but I do remember all the insults and jokes made at her expense by the right.
Basically, there's nothing this woman could do short of volunteering to take the place of a rabbit in an animal testing lab that wouldn't be objectionable to some people. Good thing she didn't follow in the footsteps of her predecessor and take a high-paying job at uber consulting group McKinsey & Co. Her father is a strong supporter of charter schools. Her mother was a school teacher. It's not possible this could be something she's legitimately interested in doing?
And if getting drunk and acting like an occasional ass in college disqualifies a person from ever accomplishing anything worthwhile in life, you can catch me and 99% of every person I went to school with down on skid row drinking malt liquor and bumming change.
As for Bush and the NAACP, he showed up to speak there in 2000 acknowledging a rocky historical relationship between the group and the GOP and got repaid with ads the NAACP ran all but accusing him of dragging James Byrd behind a pick-up truck himself. I can understand why Bush wouldn't want to kiss their rings this year.
In terms of intention, I wonder if you're all willing to give the same criticism to Clinton when he moved into Harlem. Let's not forget that his first choice for his office was midtown. He only moved to Harlem because the rent in the midtown offices were too high. His reason was financial, Jenna's reason is to help people (what's bad about that?). But somehow, he is a hero for moving to Harlem and "saving" the neighborhood, but yet she's a "little dirt bag?"
Instead of landing a cushy job on Wall Street with a 6 figure salary like another president's daughter (how many of you got that type of salary on your first job?!), Jenna chose to do something rather noble. Why the double standard? Besides, with an English degree, what else was she going to do?

If she really wanted to "help people", she'd skip the PR song and dance and ask daddy to pass some real social reform.

um... "regular (asian) joe" - actually, mckinsey does pay very well for some top grads right out of college. i knew a kid that graduated from cwru and made a good amount, i imagine chelsea's diploma from an ivy league school helped her score 6 figures (plus, my (asian) friend worked in cleveland, clearly the cost of living is higher and factored in to her wage in nyc)
I actually was going to mention something about Clinton, but decided against doing so because it's common knowledge that he was incredibly popular with minorities [and they in fact stuck by him in high numbers through the whole monica fiasco]! Although it was obviously to some extent a PR move for him to locate his offices in Harlem, I'm prepared to pretty much give him a pass because -- at the very least -- it's hard to argue that his policies actually harmed people in poverty while he made a big show about 'no child left behind' etc.
I'll give Jenna the benefit of the doubt that she's sincere about wanting to help kids -- teaching is a noble profession! -- but just question the timing of the announcement and the general appearance of pandering to a constituency that her father has done not a goddamn thing to help. By the way have you seen the "Compassion Gallery" on Bush's re-election website? More than 75% of the 'compassion' pictures are photo-ops with minorities... As the president, shouldn't caring about people of other races and backgrounds be a GIVEN -- not something you're touting as a virtue?
The Supreme Court gave Bush the benefit of the doubt and look where we are now.
Maybe the school will get a hefty donation from Bechtel in exchange for sacrificing their students to the neocon cause.
Apparently the magazine New York Resident had a small item mentioning Jenna Bush interviewing for positions at several New York schools a month ago, but mostly concentrated on the Harlem Charter School. It wouldn't surprise me if this story got pushed in today's papers in response to the NAACP flap, but it looks doubtful that damage control is her motivation for pursuing her professional interest there.

um, Clinton passed the Welfare Reform Act, which arguably was tougher on poor people than anything Bush has passed, even his tax cuts. I hate having to defend Dubya (or even appearing to - I hate the fucker and his shitbag daughter), but covering up while apologizing for Clinton is lame. And a lot of people were pretty upset about his move to Harlem, too.
Geez.. I hope she knows that she'll have only a few years to get her master's degree in NYS (I don't know if she already has one). And that after that she'll have to keep taking classes periodically in order to keep her teaching certification. It's tough to become a teacher in this state! Especially when most school districts don't pay anything for the new teachers to get their masters.
What exactly has Clinton done for Harlem? Someone please name one tangible thing.
don't be so quick to label her plans insincere - i have heard rumors that the girls are liberal dems in terms of their own beliefs.
Song and dance? I don't recall her having a press conference to announce this move. I don't recall her standing in front of a background banner that says something like "Helping Build A Better Harlem." She was asked what she planned to do by a bunch of second graders and she answered the question. The media then did its research and found that she had applied to the charter school.
Given the hiring schedule, she applied for this job in the winter and was recently called for an interview. By the way, this is likely to be a "group interview event," and will take place on the D.O.E.'s established schedule. A schedule established in early 2003, long before young Miss Bush even applied for the job. There's certainly, definitely, obviously, clearly, absolutely no way that a conspiracy exists behind the timing of this announcement.
Also, if you apologize for sounding paranoid ("I hate sounding like a conspiracy theory looney") that doesn't make you sound any less ridiculous.
And a hearty shout-out to Dave H., who's right on the ball with this one.
Oh yes, reporters often lurk the classrooms of second graders looking for breaking news. They just happened to be there for Jenna's announcement too, I presume.
Could they really be young Ron Regans in drag?
Our anger and attitude towards Jenna is obviously influenced by our views of her father. She didn't personally do anything wrong, so I guess technically it's unfair to judge her.
But goddamn, it's really hard to separate Jenna from her evil father. It's probably because she looks a whole lot like him (which is kinda freaky).
Jennabonics, you submitted that you thought the announcement was "timed" (yes, "timed") to soften the impact of protests at the RNC.
Lana wrote that she was suspicious because the announcement was "made on the day of the NAACP convention." Another "timing" theory.
I won't deny that the White House is milking the PR value of Jenna's career choice (reporters weren't "lurking" in the school waiting for news). But, there is clearly nothing villainous in her actions, nor is there any possibility (I repeat!) that the timing of this announcement was somehow influenced by either the RNC or the NAACP convention.
let's just wait and see if she really "cottons" to harlem or cuts and runs like so many others when it gets difficult. i do know that harlem and this school in particular need the attention. big up 145th st!
I hadn't heard until today that city officials tried to park the RNC protesters on Randall's Island.
That's the new free speech model: Say what you have to say on a far removed island.
They've already turned Madison Sq. Garden into a bunker. There's a bridge across 8th Ave. from Penn Station to the Post office.
They'll probably put snipers up there. This thing could easily turn into something like the WTO riots in Seattle '99.
Someone suggested that a lot of our anger against Jenna (such as we have any) comes from accidents of birth. I think it's old fashioned golden boy (girl) hatin'. A lot of us have had to work our way up or paid the price for poor grades and indulgences. Jenna B. was found by police in Texas with drugs on her more than once. The press and the police let the issue go. She limped through UT as her father limped through Yale. Yet, she retains her standing as a bright young woman. Even if most people aren't aware of all the facts, many can smell that this is a woman who's never been held accountable for herself. She's like you and me - but she gets away with it. Jenna B. is little worse than most of us and better than some. She could be likeable. Instead, we hate that she's promoted as being our better. Maybe if she didn't buy in to being a Bush she would have the bathetic/heroic qualties of Roger Clinton or Billy Carter. Instead, she's another hateful golden girl.
good point. Thats one real reason why I hate Bush so much, aside from the other obvious political reasons. He is portrayed as a great businessman, yet all his personal businesses were failures bailed out by his parents or their friends. He tries to project the image of being a rugged Texan rancher type, yet he's really just a New England prep school flunky. He acts like the Commander in Chief, demanding self sacrifice for the nation, yet he was at best AWOL during his service. He's had everything handed to him on a platter. He never had to work for what he's got. Its hard to believe in someone like that, a total golden boy.
Go get some therapy, Tigger and SP. You are both pathetic crybabies and hypocrites to boot. I'll bet you don't lose sleep over Al Gore's sorry brood of drunks. Growing up in the spotlight is no piece of cake. You whine that they are "getting away with it" but how many of us turned up on page one for buying drinks when we were underage? No one has promoted Jenna Bush as anyone else's better, you are just insecure asses.
And do the people screaming that Bush hurts Harlem know how racist they sound? As if people above 96th St. are incapable of taking care of themselves. Very condescending and foolish. If you subscribe to that theory you must really hate Clinton for signing welfare reform.
Nola - I hate to respond - but, I just wanted to clear up something. Surely, growing up in the spotlight is a burden - but one that is balanced by perks most of us can't even imagine. It's a trade, and celeb scions win out (though they are normally too spoiled to appreciate the perks). Certainly J.B. is promoted as our better; pick up a copy of Vanity Fair. While not all of the Gore's children are saints, I really haven't seen anything about them being "drunks". Bush HAS hurt Harlem. Harlemites can take care of themselves when the gov't provides a level playing field. This is rarely the case and his "starve the beast" economic/social policy is quite literally taking money out of Harlem schools and redistributing to schools that already have $$$ from local taxes. The Republican theory seems to be that if you want better schools and social services, you should give up being poor and move to a rich neighborhood (which, of course, you cannot do unless you have good schooling and social services when you grow up). Moreover, I didn't really support Clinton's welfare reform, but at least he was trying to preserve the programs by comprimising with the Republicans instead of starving them like W.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Joel Klein and Randi Weingarten are quietly being manipulated by Karl Rove without making a fuss or alerting the media. You know, what a bunch of pushovers.
Nola, you are so dumb it hurts.
Sorry Tigger but to describe the pros and cons of a celebrity's child as a "trade" betrays your lack of understanding - we don't choose our parents. As for the Gore kids - his son is a stoner and drunk driver, but the media never have given it much attention. Which is fine - I don't think these kids should be scrutinized by the media. But you are a hypocrite for applying different standards to the children of Republicans than Democrats.
And if the Republicans are "starving" public schools, maybe you can explain why spending goes up and up regardless of which party is in charge. Do you really think public schools are lousy in Harlem because they don't have enough money? How about the out of wedlock birthrate? Or fathers who don't stick around to raise their kids? Or families that spend more on sneakers than books? Put down your Vanity Fair and listen to what right-wingers like Bill Cosby have been saying.
Man I feel dumb - nola was joshing me the whole time and I didn't catch on. Nice joke n. - totally fell for your faux-right-wing platform spiel. You almost sound like you really believe that stuff. Good work. you got me.
Jenna and Barb are what now? 21, 22?
They are bonafide adults at this point. Anything they did before they graduated from college, I'll cut them some slack for, but now they are either for their daddy's war or against it, and if they are for it, then they should enlist in the armed forces. Have dubya or Laura Bush encouraged them to put their lives on the line for the war on terror? I really doubt it--that sort of sacrifice is not for the offspring of wealthy hawk republican politicians.
If they are against it, then they are big enough to let go of daddy's hand and speak out about it.
Tigger - Pretty lame comeback. What part of my statement is untrue? Something tells me you don't have an answer.
And why doesn't warpresident advocate Kerry's kids going to Iraq? He voted for war. Should Chelsea Clinton head over to Kosovo to deal with the aftermath of her daddy's actions? I don't care what side someone takes on any of these issues. Just don't be a hypocrite.
Read Orwell (no right winger) on the importance of clear thought. Unless you are too busy with Vanity Fair, Tigger.
Nola darling -- Kerry supported going to war only if an international coalition was formed.
However, that never happened because the rest of the world saw the idiocy and transparency of the plans long before those of us stuck in this administration's PR haze could.
To her credit Chelsea Clinton has put words into action by studying international policy at one of the most renowned programs in the world -- and by all accounts she got their on her own intellectual merits.Furthermore, she's now working for change at an influential think tank.
Jenna's feeble attempt to try to make a difference speaks to powers of the gray matter she inherited and has done little to enhance ("Hook 'Em Horns!").
You could argue: "At least Jenna's trying." To which I would say, if she were really working at the job best suited to her qualifications and abilities she'd be working as a floor manager at Wal-Mart in Dallas.
Even the Secret Service call her code-name "Twinkle." Or was that Twinkie, aka dumb-ass?

It's amazing how far Bush and his daughter will go to get votes. I guess this school sees this is the best way to get funding for their school! Hire an educated drunk to teach inner-city children the fundamentals of underage drinking. Is this really what that Son-of-a-Bush means by "No Child Left Behind?" But then again, they can get away with anything huh? After all, it's not like she's teaching any rich African-American kids is she... I guess the Bush family thinks that Harlem parents don't care enough about their children to protest a school hiring someone like Jenna... why should they? It's such a "great" opportunity for their children to be used as pawns and photo opportunities... I wonder... how many qualified Black teachers do they have at this school? Or is it staffed with 90% of the teachers from outside the community or ethnic make-up of the students which it serves? Isn't that how most of the schools are these days? Maybe Jenna & the principal of this school can get the staff two-for-one drinks at the Lenox Lounge or the local Wine & Spirits... I only pray for the students at this school and their parents... Wake up & smell the black coffee!
I don't think the problem is whether or not Jenna is qualified to do the job, or if it's "to get votes" for her dad, no matter what she does, you all are against her. Who cares if she partied in college, does that make her a drunk? People who didn't drink in college clearly had no life and are probably a drag to deal with. I wish I knew the girl, she seems fun to hang out with. She's way hotter than Chelsea(yuck, bad thoughts entered head).

Jenna sticking her tounge out at the national press corps.
Way to go, genius!!
Are you available to teach a classroom full of children?
