So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedershen, Andrew

akrucoff_big.jpgSomehow, for his very last interview here at Gothamist, Andrew Krucoff manages to interview himself. It's amazing what a mirror, tape recorder, or healthy number of multiple personalities can do. Oh, wait, it seems that Chris Gage helped out. Nice, but we wouldn't have put it past Andrew to have clenched his fists and given a lengthy soap-opera style monologue ("Oh, yes...Marlena will be mine"). At any rate, Gothamist is glad that he has lowered the curtain to reveal where he summers as well as his beginning as a print journalist, because it's something we've always wondered, too.

Thank you, Andrew (and Chris), for all the hard work you have put into the interviews every day for the past few months. This was some wild idea you had, but a fabulous one that we've all benefited from. We wish you the very best of luck and look forward to your future endeavors. In the meantime, we'll be able to stalk you via The Other Page.

And in the upcoming weeks, Gothamist will have guest interviewers for each week. Our first interviewer is K. Thor Jensen. And if you're interested in being an interviewer, e-mail Jake.

I love the more eclectic pieces, but don't get why these guys keep interviewing themselves. Interviewing Jake Dobkin was the most masturbatory thing ever. And if one more person tries to be cool by dramatically revealing that they were dorky growing up, I think I may have to kill them. Of course you were dorky -- you're a grown-up with a Doogie Howser computer journal.

I wish I could find an MP3 of the Doogie Howser computer journal music to listen to when I update my Doogie Howser computer journal.

I think there is an elephant in the room that no-one is mentioning, and I think it is that Andrew is achingly hot.

Regarding "masturbatory": Among all of the published sources I've ever read in my life, Gothamist has more masturbatory material than almost anything else. It comes in many different forms (not an all-inclusive list): self-linking within sections, cyclic cross-linking among different sections, self-interviewing, multiple features for site news topics, and (my favorite) perverse off-topic ramblings.

You know, it's not really all bad. Some of it works out. The self-interviews worked well, I believe. Some tactics fail because of redundancy issues, but that's usually the worst offense. (Example: between yesterday and today, 4 features on the main Gothamist will have mentioned the happy hour, plus a recent forum topic visible on all pages. The redundancy isn't obnoxious, but it is obvious)

Plus, this is Gothamist, a site about New York, and it's completely in-character in this city for one to love themselves generously. (in a figurative sense, anyway... I don't want to hear about anything in the literal sense)

Andrew, I hope this means your options are fully vested. Remember us, your friends & family, when the IPO comes, baby.

ditto, J&J

I'm with Larry. Andrew's the ultimate in geek chic.

What about those of us who like masturbation?

Seriously (although I really do like masturbation), I've enjoyed reading Andrew's interviews and wish him the best of luck over at the Gawker.

And to me this format is preferable to the royal we or some "objective" distancing stance. I like the enthusiasm with which Jen and Jake write and part of why I like reading Gothamist is not because I like pandas per se, but because I like reading about someone writing about things they they like.

I feel like it's beyond obvious to say that Gothamist is "masturbatory" - of course it is, that's the nature of the way it's been set up, and to debate that just seems a little pointless to me. Anyone can interview anyone and stick it up on a webpage, and of course people are welcome to critique that, but to me, instead of criticizing their choices of interviewees, why not just start an interview section on your own blog or read someone else's? We can all do it and then there will be hundreds of interviews to read each day until every New Yorker is interviewed.

Rachel - very much agreed.

I have something to add to this - when someone does write about things that they like in their own voice and style, publishes it on the Internet, adds discussion links, and puts it out there with no restrictions... well, then, let the opinions fly. I've published online in the past (in minor ways, perhaps) with open commenting, and through it all I considered myself fair game.

I've defended the Gothamist crew against some pretty nasty and unwarranted ad hominems. That kind of discussion is inappropriate. Valid or constructive criticism, however, should not be selectively turned away or discouraged. I don't think it's entirely constructive for everyone to do their own thing based on differences of opinion - sometimes people should share those different opinions in the interests of having a unified team contributing to a great product.

So, as long as they leave the comments open, I'll give praise where praise is due, and I'll give honest opinions when I disagree. My two-cents, when I deliver it, isn't about jealousy or sniping, it's about making a suggestion to improve the site (knowing full well Jen and Jake can blithely ignore it if they choose, and I can go elsewhere if I don't like it - no hard feelings).

That said, I'll stick around for some more masturbation.

I hope they'll let me leave comments on during my week of interviews. And I like the tone of Gothamist beause it reminds me of the tone of New York at its best - so involved with the activities of you and your friends and your world, of course everything's self-referential or an in-joke - how can you avoid it? I approve.

I just love that Andrew was able to get his picture in the middle column for the entire weekend. Since Interview publishes M-F, there wont be another mug there till Monday. Smooth!

Anyway, best of luck at Gawker!
