Post's Punditry Proves Puny; NYC Gets To Laugh

2004_07_boring.jpg

The NYC media is thrilling in the Post's egg-on-face John Kerry running mate non-scoop. Reuters reported that the Daily News sent "a case of champagne to Post editors and a note, 'Congratulations on your front page. Have a nice day,' with a smiley face. The barb refers to a Post advertisement near the Daily News building showing improved circulation figures, with the words 'have a nice day' and smiley face." Sigh. Gothamist wishes the tabloids would get things wrong every day - it's so fun!

Of course, Post editor-in-chief Col Allan owned up to the mistake, but everyone knows he was really hoping that Ashton Kutcher would jump out to admit he'd been punk'd. And maybe Dick Gephardt is upset, after a staffer read the Post. But this is the greatest story: Definitely some pissed-off liberal must have developed a relationship with a Post journalist who clearly trusted him or her...this might be a lesson in actually having patience in order to get revenge! And who are the brilliant people on eBay getting bids of over $30 for their messed up editions of the Post? Anyway, the Times and Daily News look at the mistake, with the Daily News going to town on the Post ("a colossal flub" and "humiliating"). Today, the Post adds a "(Really)" to their cover of Kerry picking Edwards and prints letters to the editor from readers who are sympathetic to the mistake.

Here is the official press release from Kerry about naming John Edwards his running mate. What Gothamist wants to know about is the thing on Edwards' lip. Is it some skin disease? Or a really really pale mole? Is that where his political ambition lies? Or is it full of evil? Is an unborn person in there? We're so distracted by it!

Yesterday's post on our fears that Kerry picked Gephardt.

Probably newspapers-other media get things wrong all the time. We just don't know it. Look at the whole Iraq thing with WMD and how the Times pushed that, etc. There are probably lots of everything things that the papers get wrong.l

MOLE! BLOODY MOLE! We aren't supposed to talk about the bloody mole, but there's a bloody mole winking me in the face! I want to c-u-u-t it off, ch-o-o-p it off, and make guacamole!

    ... oh, sorry...

So anyway, I had a chance to buy 6 or 7 of these things yesterday at the el-cheapo price well into the afternoon. I decided against it because I thought it was ludicrous that the bidding was up to $10 apiece and that mine would never get sold. Well, now they're up to $60, and next time I spend the FREAKIN $3 to make $300! ARRGH!

And God bless New York for having these two knuckleheaded rivals for newspapers, the ones we can count on to give us a little color in our day frequently enough. (with headlines like "AXIS OF WEASEL: Germany and France wimp out on Iraq" in the Post, for example.)
