Coolfer's Music Picks
Tonight the Knitting Factory and the Onion are having a listening party for Wilco's A Ghost Is Born. Of course, you could have been downloading the album off the Internet for the last three months, and the band's website was streaming the entire album well before its release. But...if you haven't heard it or just want to show up to get a handful of flyers and a free button, the event starts at 7pm. While you're there, there will be a band called Kash playing at the Tap Bar. Kash features Kelli Scar of the band Moonraker. She has an incredible voice and is well worth checking out.
Or you could hit the Coral Room to check out Baby, the current band of former Shudder to Think frontman Craig Wedren. $8 at 8pm.
Or you could see lovely local band Hem play at Madison Square Park. Show starts at 7pm.
Tomorrow evening, indie darlings The Stills are playing a free show at the Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park. Yes, they're very hip, very cutting edge. At least, that's what I read at Pitchfork. This is a big, big deal for at least half the East Village and no less than 64% of Williamsburg. Get ahead of the curve and get yourself some indie rock. Here's the catch: tickets will be distributed, two to a person, starting at 5pm tomorrow afternoon. The show starts at 7pm. You can stream the band's entire album, Logic Will Break Your Heart, at the band's website.
On Friday, there's another Concert For Kerry at Southpaw. This one has David Cross, Jon Benjamin and Todd Barry. Tickets are $25/$30, and hopefully that money will go toward swaying voters in a state which is relatively on the fence. New York should be in the bag.
If you didn't make it PS1 last Saturday, you can make ammends by going this Saturday afternoon. Steve Kotey of UK production group Chicken Lips will share time on the decks with Miles Maeda.
Volume is a survivor. Still in business after a slight scare. So Saturday night go over there and check out White Magic, Hisham Akira Bharoocha (ex of Black Dice), Queens and Uw Owl.
Also Saturday is Jet, Sloan and the Everyones/Anyones (there's a legal dispute...I'm not sure what they're called these days) at the Roseland. That latest Jet single is the worst song on the album (reminds me of Krokus) but is getting a ton of play. Just wait until the ballads come out. Then Jet is going to really blow up.
Rothko has an early show on Sunday (starts at 1:30pm). Not sure how it'll be to hang out in the dark, red-walled cave on a Sunday afternoon, but check out the line-up: Elkland, The Bravery and Surefire. Elkland has been dragging in releasing their album, but it should be a good one. Local guys The Bravery play catchy, New Romantic-era pop. They've got some teeth, some good hooks and more than a few moves. Shouldn't be long before they're playing bigger venues, so go see them at a small venue and get an afternoon buzz. Tickets, though, are $15. I guess you've gotta pay for potential these days, huh?
The kids love Plantom Planet, don't they? So much, in fact, that their Monday show at Irving Plaza is sold out. Say hello to the scalpers for me.
