Methinks the alarm rating is an indication of how many firehouses are called on to supply trucks and men - hence 2-alarm means two fire companies, six-alarm would be six.

I could smell the smoke all the way to Lexington Ave in the East 90s! Saw some firetrucks rushng thru the 'hood, thought it was a fire on York Ave! Must've been on the way to support Bklyn!

The article covering the fire in the Times mentions that there was once a 16-alarm fire for a hotel! On a somber note, there weren't "alarms" on September 11th, they just simply sent out a call for all staff. I forgot what firefighters call that type of "all hands report to scene" request.
